The Contenders

These are the contenders for an upcoming submission to MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) Georgia! I'm really excited about the possibility of actually having my work shown in a museum. I can submit up to 5 pieces, so one of the above has to be eliminated. Along with images of the work, I'll be fi...

Transitioning

It's finally completed! Well, at least the preliminary painting is. I've got the big easel ready to go, complete with a grid. I'll be sketching and applying the first strokes of color soon! Thank you for joining me through the process.

A walk in the woods.

I took a much needed break from the studio today and used the time to get out into nature.  I've got a busy week ahead of me and a recharge of the creative battery always helps.  Thank you all so much for your support!  This has been a stressful time and I appreciate having all of ...

An update on the new piece.

The new piece isn't 100% finished yet, but I'm also about to start on the larger piece.   I wanted to update you all on the progress made so far, and also to thank you for your interest and support as this piece has been coming together.  It has been very rewarding for me to share ...

A week

Today's progress is shown in the first picture. The second photo was my post from Monday! Things are really coming together! I'm almost there! Next week, I'll be submitting this painting for a show!

Paint it black

The majority of today's work was all about black. Some time ago, I made a resolution. I stopped using black paint. I'd found that when I used black from the tube, my paintings would automatically become overwhelmed with it. They looked moody, flat, and too dark. I'm not opposed to dark colors, an...

Collapsing on the sofa, and a poem.

I have been working almost non stop on my new painting, but I took a little bit of time to relax on the sofa and film a video for YouTube.  Before I started filming that I took a few minutes to read a funny little book that I have.  It's topical in a way, and I hope that you enjoy it. &...

On the easel

I worked mostly on the cord wrapping of the bow today. It's been meticulous. It was almost dissatisfying, because I really like the feeling of blending with a brush. But when I stepped away from it, I had a great sense of satisfaction from how it looked!

In the details

At this point, it's all detail! I spent a good while today refining the painting throughout the bust and corset. Shadows, highlights, and little details in the seams!

Today's progress!

By the time a piece is "almost" done, day to day progress is practically imperceptible. I don't wish to bore you, but there is a difference since the last picture I shared!

The wind in the moss and my hair.

This was a wonderful moment.  The wind was cool  but the sun was warm.  I think this is the last clip that I have from this fun and special trip!

I've been framed!

I meant to post these last night, but I was exhausted.

I spent the better part of yesterday building my giant canvas!  I need to build a canvas  at least once a week because it's a workout! With the sawing, gripping, and drilling required, my arms and hands were painfully aware th...

I've worked and re-worked the background to a point of satisfaction! Now I'm working on completing the figure!

A walk past Doc Holliday's place.

I went for a stroll through downtown Griffin Georgia.  Right past the old stomping grounds of Doc Holliday.  I did think that it was interesting that he moved from Georgia to New Mexico. and I did the opposite.  It's a beautiful downtown and I really enjoyed being there.

I continue building up layers! Sometimes when working with a busy background like this, I get a little lost. I had to step back and just look at the painting today as I worked. It helps.

Neptune Park

I forgot to post this little piece of video that I shot while down at the coast.  I think that the time of day is just about perfect for walking along the shore.  I could feel the little drops of the ocean on my skin as I strolled along through a beautiful park.

On the easel.

Returning to my painting today, I continued building depth in the background! Working with dark colors, I mixed paint with hints of dark blue and purple. I switched up the brushstrokes with a variety of paint brush sizes.

After the storm.

It is unseasonably warm for January, even in Georgia.  The cause, is a storm that came through and brought high winds and torrential rain from the Gulf of Mexico.  I went out to a fun place that I had found (you can see the video) over the Summer.  The secret tower that I found sti...

On the Easel. A video update.

Today I did a little filming as I painted! I've tried to write descriptions as I've updated my progress, but sometimes, things are just easiest said! I discuss the process of painting and talk about the corset.

A funny little village

Another video from my Christmas trip! A fun little area for shopping, not far from the beach! These impossibly tiny shops are up on stilts! I can't imagine working here, as there are a lot of steps! As you'll see, I'm often distracted while filming, and trip going up the stairs. I hope that you e...

On the easel

Today's progress was all about creating the illusion of depth. I know myself well enough to know that if I mess up on the background, I will become disappointed with this painting. So it's been slow and steady, intentionally. Slow layering with sheer colors will continue to add depth.

Sandblasted Cupcakes!

Here's a fun little clip that shows how crazy windy it was when I tried to check out the ocean on my recent trip.  I could barely stand up!  The ocean was crashing and the wind in my ears made it impossible to hear.  It was as if I was on another planet.  I suppose that some p...

In the studio

I've ordered six yards of canvas, and purchased my brick moulding. While I wait for my shipment to arrive, I'll keep myself busy with a proof of concept painting. It's much smaller, but practice is always good! In the photos above, I've created my grids on both my reference photo and canvas...

Island Textures

The process: reference photo to painting

I've selected the perfect reference photo for an archery painting! That's the easy part!

My next step is printing the image and drawing a grid on it. My grid will break the image into one inch squares.

That's where all the math comes in. In order to keep an accurate aspect ratio, ...

First project started in the new year!

I went out and took a set of reference photos today and officially set in motion the first new project started in 2020!  I'll still be finishing many things that I've set into motion in 2019, but this project is all 2020.  I've got to build a custom stretcher for the canvas, so it will ...

Checking out the Spanish Moss.

I was fascinated by this interesting plant.  It was everywhere on the island that I visited.  Moving in the wind and creating a beautiful sea of motion hanging below creeping branches.  Spanish moss is an epiphyte which absorbs nutrients and water through its leaves from the air an...
