Maybe its my eyes used to this piece but I wanted to separate head and tail
all this dark grey mix just blends together
So I would choose 1st option, its simpler and there is separation and some darker value to piece

Most of the monthly stuff is done, will contact people for sketch ideas soon and animation requests will be finally open
