This is why I just draw the pictures and Colin writes the jokes. Mine are... inherently unfunny.
At this point, we hadn't decided on a name yet, and are using the 'Adventurer's Handbook' from a Pathfinder game that my fighter had in her possession. When we first decided to do the comic...

We don’t have much in the way of continuity in our main strip. The Handbook of Heroes might feature a few mini-series of related gags (e.g. the Anti-Party pages or 2017-06-24 04:26:59 +0000 UTC

Since her hair covers her eyes 90% of the time, I didn't actually bother to design them until the script called for Wizard to discover the horror lurking under Thief's bangs. You might have noticed that Sorcerer's grandmother has similar eyes, which may or may not signify that they're related.

This is where Paladin's design in particular solidified, as I wanted him to have the same sort of body shape as Fighter but to be obviously 'good' as well, in contrast to Fighter's complete lack of morals. Aasimar was an easy choice, as was the golden armor.
This is the first time I drew eit...

Ranger ended up being the third member of what Colin and I refer to as the 'bikini mail' party, but she wasn't originally going to be included. All of Colin's scripts said 'Swashbuckler' along with Magus and Inquisitor, but I'd never designed a Swashbuckler.
We decided on Ranger as a good wa...

When Laurel and I first sat down to discuss our Patreon, we realized that a pinup gallery could be a good idea. And hey, why not turn it into a fully fledged spin-off? I pitched the title Handbook of Erotic Fantasy, we both giggled like idiots, and a new strip was born. The only trouble was...

I pretty much loved Magus from the moment I drew her, an the only real change before she appeared in Handbook was a minor wardrobe adjustment. I tried to give a good range of the available races for these concepts, though I admit that I steered away from gnomes. Halflings are just more f...

Colin and I don’t have a table at Denver Comic Con, but we will be attending the convention next weekend, and if you track us down, I’ll have a super-exclusive giveaway for Handbook (and Chorus) fans who find us at the con! Look for the Batman and Batgirl pokemon trainers on Saturday, or f...

Witch has actually appeared in the comic where Sorcerer was first introduced, but I changed her design slightly. Summoner... probably needs a redesign, to be honest. I'm not happy with this one, and he'll likely look radically different before he turns up in a strip.

These are some of the initial concepts for the secondary tier of characters, and it includes my very favorite: Alchemist. I love the idea of a dwarf with dreadlocks, and I've been pestering Colin to feature him in a comic sometime soon.
Cavalier also has yet to appear, but Gunslinger was act...

Welcome all to the inaugural strip of the new, backers-only Handbook of Erotic Fantasy! We’ve changed the art style, adjusted our nudity sliders, and made some changes to (ahem) party composition.
Speaking of which, I trust that you’ve heard of the girdle of femininity / mas...

For some reason, I changed Thief into a human for this test sketch, and for the life of me I can't remember why. She's also missing her fabulous hips, but Wizard and Cleric still resemble their final forms.

I wasn't sure at first how cartoony I wanted to go with Handbook, and these were some of the initial sketches that were slightly more realistic. Paladin obviously changed a lot from this first appearance in my sketchbook, but I was always certain that he had to be a foil to fighter.

This is the second sketch I did of the main cast, and this actually makes me regret that Cleric got less round the longer I drew him. It's pretty fabulous to have a roly-poly dwarf next to the rest of the party. Fighter is oddly tall here, but that changed eventually as well.

When I first designed the party for Handbook, the first thing I wanted to address was giving every character a unique silhouette. They did change a little from these initial sketches (holy cow Cleric is round!), but this was the first time that the party was recognizable.
