Raycevick's Recommendations: SW: The Clone Wars

I couldn't for the life of me see the appeal in this show initially. Treating it like any other, where you launch the pilot and tour through the first season, all I witnessed was Yoda giving basic military advice that made Clone Troopers bow their heads in astonishment.

Thing is, Clone Wars isn't a standard show. You don't need to watch the first episode. Hell, you don't even need to watch most of the first season. This is a show made up of episodes and arcs, and as such, you don't need to consume the fat, and instead bit right into the meat.

Which should be done because The Clone Wars very much realizes the potential of the prequels. The supreme art-direction, character designs, and world are thoroughly explored, taking the approach that every character, no matter how insignificant in the grand scheme, has a story, immediately giving more weight to the proceedings.

And even more so than Avatar: The Last Airbender, the kid's show tendencies progressively fade-away. There's executions, war-crimes, and even political intrigue. It's advised you consult a friend or the internet on which episodes/arcs to watch and which ones to skip or save for your later curiosities, but if you want a mixture of entertainment and drama, Clone Wars is worth checking out.

I still argue TCW is right behind ESB and ANH for the best SW media out there. It’s basically everything we wanted the prequels to be. It fixes most issues with the prequels. Was Anakin weirdly awkward and uncharismatic in AoTC? Here he is hella fun and charismatic. Did Obi-Wan and Anakin feel like they didn’t even like each other that much until RoTS? Here there is a real tangible connection. Did the Padme romance feel super uncomfortable? Here it feels natural and well developed. Did the prequels take away a lot of the mysticism of the force? TCW (specifically the Mortis Arc) puts it right back. Was a lot of the dialogue and acting cringe inducing in TPM and AoTC? After season 2 the dialogue and performances in TCW ranges from perfectly fine to incredible, notable example being Sam Witwer as Maul. And like ppl say, it sheds its “kids show” reputation over time to the point where you’re watching shit I genuinely can’t believe Cartoon Network let air. By halfway through season 3 both in tone and maturity it’s a totally different show, that’s kinda why halfway through S3 there’s some major visual upgrades, animation enhancements, and redone character designs, that help illustrate the evolution of the show. If I’m being entirely honest I suggest you just watch all of it. You CAN skip around but I feel seeing everything both good and bad really helps you appreciate the highs it has. Specifically Ahsoka is a particularly annoying character at first and wasn’t that likeable. But as anyone whose watched the show can tell you she develops into easily the best female character and one of the best characters in general in the whole franchise. The experience of watching Ahsoka go from a character you don’t like at all that super annoys you into an absolute favorite that you constantly want to see more of really does make the experience and connection to the characters stronger, on top of giving you a very good example of how something can become great even from a bad start. I genuinely think it’s important just to watch all of it start to finish to really appreciate how much the show developed and where it came from versus where it ended. I’m glad season 7 really brought attention to the general SW community that TCW is an absolute must watch for the franchise.
