Patreon Q&A #30

How do you usually go about finding old devs of games to contact and ask questions yourself? There are quite a few games that I'd love to contact a dev and let them know I appreciate their work but I don't know how.

Actually, I haven't really.

I've reached out to developers multiple times, but only on one occasion have I spoken to someone attached to a project before the video's release, that being quite recently for Alpha Protocol YL. I don't take it personally, it's about trust. I don't expect developers to just talk to any random person like me who wants questions about something they've likely not thought about in five years or more.

So, I apologize for the lack of answer, your guess is as good as mine. But from what I've heard of the people who have gotten talks with Developers, it's merely about making the effort to reach out, via Twitter or Email, and crossing your fingers. Something I've definitely learned from Doc Studies, is that it never hurts to ask.

What's your favorite melee combat system in a game and what about it is so satisfying?

Shadow Warrior 2, and Chivalry are definitely the games that first come to mind, but I've noticed it's hard for me to put together a list, and I think that stems from the the majority of systems being instant gratification. In Humans: Fall Flat, friends and I booted up something called the "Ice Arena" and spent over an hour with it. Not just because the game-mode was hilarious, but because there was some real fun in using boneless physics based characters and objects, and creating a sword fight with jumps, ducks, and dodges.

The effort, was the reward.

What are some games you'd like to make a video about but don't feel like you could add much to what has been said already by other analysts?

I don't like to make a video unless I can bring something to the table. The day I talk about Metal Gear Solid is when I feel I'm not just repeating Super Bunnyhop or Matthewmatosis. Same with Splinter Cell and Thief. Though, my lacking interest in them could stem from not growing up with them, lacking the passion those people have.

Halo is one of the most popular shooters, but I definitely have a particular passion for, due to the sheer amount I played them during my Teen Years, and felt a need to talk about them as a result.

Have you played Outer Wilds? What did you think? (Potential future video?)

Not yet, but it's one that since its release, I've been bugged to give a try, so I look forward to seeing what NoClip, Bunnyhop, Skillup, and more were raving about.

I agree with Leveler, it's fantastic and I came into the game not knowing a single thing about it. Has there ever been a game that's given you a strong emotional response to what was going on (i.e. From a heartfelt/heartbreaking story, developers meeting/exceeding their potential in terms of delivering a quality video game)?

You should definitely play the outer wilds, it's fucking fantastic. What is the most immersive gaming experience you've had and what stood out about it to you?
