I think the lovable rogue is in everybody's top three character archetypes. There's just an admiration in seeing someone who's lawless yet compassionate. Han Solo's easily the most famous, but I didn't grow up with Star Wars. Bioware games come to my mind.
Mainly in the characters of Garrus Vakarian & Varric Tethras.
Perhaps I'll write a Randomly Mine going more in-depth with these characters, but in-short, their contradictions are what make them so compelling. The C-Sec agent that's constantly Renegade should Shepard not steer them away. The Dwarf merchant that lies to help people rather than deceive them. Good characters don't necessarily have it easy, if anything, their care and compassion makes things that much harder, and it's inspiring to see them carry on.
That might also be why its so much fun to see the total opposite. The archetype of the Asshole. I guess Anti-Hero would be the official term, but Anti-Heroes include people like Walter White, Dexter Morgan, people who do many bad things, but still carry even a facade of likability. I'm more thinking of characters like HK-47. Even player-characters in Obsidian games.
Those who do not possess a single damn for anybody other than themselves, and are immune to social pressure, moral conflict, or empathy. The Saints Row 2 boss is easily one of my favorites. It's so fascinating to be engaged by someone's hilarious dialogue and action antics one moment, to doing something completely horrifying.
And lastly, the shy heroes. This archetype might just be fresh in my mind due to playing Outer Worlds and having Parvarti in my Party constantly. It's not just relatable, being someone also isolated and just wanting to do what's best, but also fun to see that character grow to be independent with time.
Advanced Warfare. That UN scene... what were they thinking?
I'm an aggressive Sniper.
He's just following in your footsteps.
