Raycevick Recommends: Senna (2010)

Previously, I've mentioned that Formula 1: Drive to Survive isn't as emotionally touching as the Producer's films. I can't speak to his Documentary on Amy Winehouse, but Senna is a film that even after multiple viewings, moves my heart. Whether you've read all of the legend's backstory, or only know Formula 1 by that mad race in Monaco, the film provides more than enough context to bring viewers up to speed.

Senna's life was a screenplay, complete with rivalries, tragedies, and emotional highs. While lacking a complete picture due to a limited run time, there's moments here no other documentary, feature, or article has, and they do wonders to humanize someone that to Millions, was seen as so much more.

Personally, the documentary served as one of my biggest inspirations. It showed me how powerful of a movie you can make purely through edited archives, and how you can tell a new story by simply compiling clips which could never previously be put together. The enthralling cockpit footage during Senna's most blistering laps were exclusive to Japanese broadcasters, and deliver a nail-biting picture when combined with all the camera angles used by different companies around the world.

Oh, and the soundtrack by Antonio Pinto is quite brilliant.

Easily one of my favorite Documentaries, and Films, period.

I remember seeing a clip of this shown on Top Gear. But despite it being well edited and engaging, I was never really into F1 so I didn't chase the film down. If I ever see it pop up again, I'll make sure to give it a watch. Thanks for the tip!
