RPGs are probably one of the most challenging genres for the Middle-Market. It's hard to create vast stretches of content when you're budget barely covers the cost of a keyboard. The vast amounts of dialogue required from that budget results in mandated mediocrity in voice, or lines and lines and lines of text.
And while Outward does run into these hurtles, in co-op, it manages to be a game with lots of charm, challenge, and atmosphere.
The game's strength is oddly enough, its visuals and immediate reactivity. Specifically, how the visuals and your character are connected here. Rain isn't just there for immersion, it actually effects you.
Obviously this idea isn't new, but in a compelling and open-ended fantasy RPG, rather than yet another zombie apocalypse, or nuclear wasteland, Outward's long strolls through the valleys punctuated by tense (albeit clunky) combat, while tedious solo, makes for a great co-op experience, especially if you both really push for unique builds.
