Recommendations: The Rock (1996)

The amount of mockery Michael Bay gets from viewers and critics alike I think very much stems from that he's clearly talented, and movies like The Rock show how.

The films a majestic balance of action, drama, and camp. It's got a compelling Villain lashing out against the US, a hysterically naïve character played by Nicholas Cage, and multiple action set-pieces that would set the stage for multiple video-games in the years to come.

That I'd never seen it until now and loved it, is a testament to how gracefully it's aged.

Comments

The Rock is the perfect amalgamation of what Michael Bay does well before he leaned into having unlimited budgets and going hog wild on tropes and types. It's dumb fun and almost all the casting was on point.

With great lines such as “What in Zeus’ BUTTHOLE!…” how can you not recommend it.
