I always preferred Critters. Now that is a classic horror-comedy

It's interesting, I had never realized that the actor that plays Lionel Luther in Smallville is in this.

The monster movie that Grandpa Fred shows on his creature feature TV show is called OCTAMAN. Terrible movie, kinda cool monster costume. I'm pretty sure they used this clip as a goof on GREMLINS 2 effects genius Rick Baker, as the Octaman costume was his first professional work, at around 20-21 years old.
When the Futtermans are sightseeing they stop outside the "Church of Saint Eva Marie." Very silly joke referring to the acclaimed film actress Eva Marie Saint.
The theme was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, who did the original music for the RAMBO series, so when Gizmo does his training montage Goldsmith is basically parodying his own theme music. Also, Christopher Lee's original signature character was Count Dracula, whom he played in seven Hammer Studios movies from the 1950s through the '70s. When one of the Gremlins mutates into the Bat-Gremlin, Goldsmith's theme starts to riff on Lee's old "Dracula" theme.
When GREMLINS 2 came out on VHS, the director and producers decided that the joke about Gremlins invading the movie's projection booth wouldn't make sense, so they swapped this scene out with a brand-new scene showing Gremlins taking control of the viewer's VCR and flipping through channels. If you missed the movie in theaters you didn't get to see Hulk Hogan until it was released on DVD about a decade later. Here is the VHS-only scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E2K1vqcuuc
Also, in the GREMLINS 2 novelization - if you're not familiar with "novelizations," they're when studios hire a writer to quickly adapt a screenplay for an upcoming movie into book form - the scene plays out completely differently. At the same moment in the story as the film's film break, Gremlins tie up the book's author and the Brain Gremlin takes over writing the book for a couple pages. The pages are shown here: https://mondoshop.com/blogs/news/16991327-the-ultra-meta-gremlins-2-novelization

Funny reading this comment,as half way through this movie,my mind just literally started thinking about "Small Soldiers (1998)" and how it would be a great reaction for this channel and that they would both love it
I had no idea that they were both directed by the same guy until I read this comment
The 'Burbs (1989) Tom Hanks also such a fun movie

This movie was not well received at the time, Joe Dante made some great movies that have gained popularity through the years. Check out Innerspace, Small Soldiers and The Burbs.

Real practical effects are definitely timeless! I wish movie studios these days wouldn't rely so heavily on CGI
