Otto & Olya revisions

I’ve been going through the pages of O&O i drew previously and deciding that they needed revising, so I’ve been punching up/redrawing panels to make them better, more exciting, more interesting, whatever. I have always been a notorious perfectionist but I am usually much happier when I fix stuff to my satisfaction. This is a personal project and I want it to be as good as it can be. Kubrick did a hundred takes of every shot right???

The previous version of this panel was fine but I also thought it was a little flat so I wanted to reframe it for a more interesting shot. I also added the small insert of Otto lighting his cigarette - I like those little details.

A lot of the time it’s just gut feeling - I know that it could be better. Sometimes if the panel isn’t communicating the information clearly and is confusing to the reader it needs to be redrawn. In this case the panel was fine, it was clear enough, but I just felt that it was kind of flat and not that interesting. Because I am so often influenced by movies, I had that flat shot in mind but was imagining it with a slow push in toward the bar, but of course this isn’t a movie, it’s a still image, so in retrospect the drawing wasn’t very exciting. The angled composition is a little more interesting to the eye I think.

I wonder how you make a panel more exciting. Do you just follow your gut feeling, or is there a more "intellectual" process? (maybe both).
