For another world war 2 movie that's intense but long lol I would recommend Das Boot the directors cut. It is all in german so you would have to watch the subtitles but it makes more sense in the original german. All quiet on the western front (2022) even though that was about the germans side of ww1, and they changed it from the book and the original version of it, I think 2022 was the third adaptation of the book.

If you're looking for a good read, try "Truman" by David McCollough. Probably the best Biography of the guy

To be fair, Truman could get his feathers ruffled pretty easily and was as blunt as a hammer, but he never called Oppenheimer a crybaby to his face - he did describe Oppenheimer as a "crybaby scientist" later on to aids

Canβt help wondering if that was a twist lobbied for by Oldman, given his politics.

I'm a little disappointed at the portrayal of Truman in this. That wasn't the man's character at all.
Dramatic license, I suppose...

Insomnia is a good Nolan movie with Robin Williams and Al Pacino

I recommend watching a few of Neil Hallorans videos on ww2 and nuclear weapons. He goes into detail about the Long Peace or New Peace. Which is a long period where that hasn't been any wars between great powers, mainly because of the threat of Mutually Assured Destruction. So in a way some of what Oppenheimer wanted to happen is continuing to be achieved...... for now.

I love that at one point Oppenheimer says in an hour and 58 minutes they will know whether or not it worked and at one hour and 58 minutes into the movie we see the bomb go off and they say it worked haha.

I remember being disappointed that they didn't show Oppenheimer's obsession with making salads in this film. They show him smoking a lot, and that's ultimately what killed him. The BBC version in the '80's showed Oppenheimer often making elaborate salads for people he invited over for dinner while he casually discussed work. I read that this was true. He was ahead of his time in salads, too! The BBC version showed him spooning avocados into the salad bowl he was making for his guests. He'd also add various seeds and berries and was known to make his own dressings. Yet, he still smoked like a chimney and died of cancer.

Another amazing film that's in the same theme as this one is Imitation Game. Definitely worth a watch.

It being Oscar season I recommend you guys watch Society of the Snow. It's already on the foreign film poll but it would be cool before the Oscars (it's nominated for best makeup and best international film). Anyway, so excited for this one, I'm grabbing my popcorn. πΏ

This is an important film because it is an important topic that has only been covered a few other times in mainstream films. It is a very well made film. But, the cinematic style is nothing I haven't seen before. It will be seen as a landmark for anyone who hasn't seen the BBC miniseries from the 80's that had Sam Waterston playing Oppenheimer. That miniseries was much longer and more detailed, but didn't have any where near as big of a budget as this film. Over time, everyone will eventually see this film as no more than a companion to "Fat Man and Little Boy" (1989).

The biggest theme of Oppenheimer's life is technological and moral evolution. Technological evolution is only dangerous without moral evolution. Oppenheimer and his physicists could do the math to create the bomb, but they didn't have the moral power to keep it under control. Nolan demonstrates this with the trials of Oppenheimer along with lack of moral judgment with his own personal relationships with his wife and mistress. The sequel to this film, and to Oppenheimer's fear of complete destruction would be Rickover's story. Admiral Rickover built the first nuclear reactor for the US Navy in 4 years, despite Oppenheimer thinking it would take decades. A huge reason we have never had a nuclear war is because the U.S. Navy has the only nuclear reactor program that has never had a safety failure. China and Russia are afraid to fight a nuclear war with the United States because they know that the nuclear reactors in the U.S. Navy never fail. The reason for that has a lot to do with Admiral Rickover's moral integrity with the design standards for those reactors, which the U.S. Navy still uses today. Rickover refused inferior design standards because of his moral objection of putting U.S. Navy sailors at risk of a failure of the the nuclear reactors on their submarines and aircraft carriers.
