The realm of cubing that sparked my interest this month.
Added 2020-11-24 10:13:15 +0000 UTCIt's a big struggle every month to make a post here for some reason, that I've just been forgetting to do it. I think it's more realistic if I just make these posts shorter, so here it is!
Making the top 10 facts video about the Rubik's Cube was extremely time consuming; surprisingly it took as long as one of the animations do. However, what was going to just be 1 video has opened up an entire rabbit hole of interesting stuff I never bothered to look at before! Having no competitions has slightly diminished my motivation to practice cubing, but I can definitely see this as an opportunity to learn more and expand the types of videos I make.
Originally I was going to go much more in-depth for each topic of the video, but then I realized some of the more interesting ones (like God's number) couldn't be done justice in a compilation. I ended up glossing over a lot of the interesting and thought-provoking details to just say the main facts, which is neat because it got a lot of people talking in the comments and asking me about stuff. So I think I'll make a future video for whatever I think is interesting there.
I've been feeling lately like I don't want to be making as many tutorials as before. While making a tutorial is a lot easier than the more creative stuff, each new thing I can teach is obviously less important to learn than whatever I made years ago, as I started with the more important stuff. In the future maybe I'll revisit some of them and make updated tutorials based on what I think then, such as for the how to be sub-x series.
But lately I've really been feeling the cube theory (+ inevitably some history), especially with less competition pressure. I also think this stuff is just widely appealing and can be a fun way to teach some mathematical + logical thinking. Because when you really get down to it, a lot of cubing can just feel like pattern recognition and fast fingers, which isn't entirely true, but it can definitely be a fun detour to look at some stuff about the cube that is simply interesting.
