Yeah I agree, it was about closure for Kara, not about the mom.

I don't think the point of Kara's mom dying was to feel sympathy for her. The whole thing is that her being there to see her mother off was the trigger for Kara finally being able to let go of her emotional funk that's she's lived in her entire life. The emotion meant to be felt is relief that she did it and sadness of how much it took for her personally to get there.

Fun fact, the script didn't call for Adama to smash the model ship, that was completely improvised by Edward James Olmos. Now what's really crazy is that that ship was apparently actually like a priceless item that they were renting from a museum. So Edward James Olmos completely wrecked some super old and expensive museum piece without knowing it.
