Well, it's a lifeform, as stated by the doctor and everyone else, they say it's a lifeform :), that repurposes other lifeforms into something that they were trying to understand, so they "fed" Eros to it. It was on Phoebe, which is a Saturn moon (irl as well) captured by Saturn "eons ago". The head of family Mao (Julie's father) found it on Phoebe, cause it basically his station there (owned by him, we don't know where he is actually stationed), decided to transport it, Julie tried to catch the ship, the rest is starting with s1e1 and so on. So your understanding is correct so far. Fred and Holden, earthers, see the doctor as an opportunity to do "good", each in their own understanding, or just an opportunity, Miller sees the dude who killed 100k belters because he was trying to understand something.
