Also Spike Spiegel is my all time favorite protagonist. I hope you grow to like him more because he is the definition of cool.

The best I can tell you is that Bebop in its story telling is the DEFINITION of SHOW NOT TELL. You as the viewer have to read into the ambiguous dialogue and flashbacks. Now that is not to say ALL flashbacks are done in the fashion this episode did them in. However this show wants you to piece things together yourself, not just hand the entire picture to you.
