ENTERPRISE 1701D WALKING TRAIL CONCEPT SKETCH

As requested, in reference to a HAIL from Andy Morgan on TNC episode on "Masks":

"Matt has mentioned how much he loved the lighting in Star Trek: Generations so much (where nearby suns and nebula light the interior of the ship).

It made me wonder if he knows about my favorite unseen part of the Enterprise D: a “walking trail” on the edge of the ship’s saucer section?

When ILM built the Enterpise D model they could not get lights into the edge of the saucer section because of the internal support structure for the model (this is the same reason why only the lights for ten-forward are ever seen to be on).

Andrew Probert designed a lovely in-universe explanation for this: an observation deck along the edge of the saucer for the crew to enjoy a walk among the stars - basically a hallway that circled the entire edge of the saucer section and made use of its many hundreds of windows for viewing space. It was to be a place where the only light source would be the alien stars, planets and nebula that the Enterprise visits.

Mr. Probert designed a set concept but it was never built. I’ve attached his design sketch which shows both a deck cross-section of his idea and it’s location on the hull. (It’s a fairly crude sketch.)

Thank you for the show!

Andy Morgan"

Thank YOU fellow Andy!
