Hey, so I have a "didn't make sense but the audience fixed it" for the computer and how it determines when to answer a question. According to TOS episode Metamorphosis, Kirk explains to the Companion that the Universal Translator not just analyzes speech patterns and known linguistics, but it also analyzes the speaker's brainwave patterns and looked for thoughts it recognized to so quickly translate new languages. If in that time the UT was able to basically read your mind, then the computers in ships by the TNG era must also have that ability. The computer is not just responding to what the crew members are saying, but it also is reading brainwaves that it recognizes as those associated with querying the computer versus other random conversations. Of course, that leads to a whole other mess of questions about what kind of intimate brainwave data the computer has stored about anyone who's ever been on the ship. EDIT: Adding as I listen to the podcast, I'm sure I'm overthinking what the writers were going for, but the way I read into this episode as a woman is that it served as a kind allegory for the how sometimes when we try to protect a group we can become patronizing, which happens a lot in feminism. You have the "feminists" who are every bit as belligerent towards women who want to work in fields like the sex industry or who chose to be a stay-at-home mom as the misogynists who coerced women into being objectified or prevent them from getting out of the house. Both are limiting the woman's choices, just from different ends of the spectrum. If we establish that Kamala actually wants to fulfill her society's role as a metamorph, then no matter how much others may want to intercede "for her own good," they are themselves taking her right to choose away. The main idea should be to listen to the person and support their right to bodily and emotional autonomy, even if that choice isn't one you think they should be making.
