DINNER & A MOVIE #1: 'Die Hard'

DINNER & A MOVIE #1: 'Die Hard'

Comments

Although I'm not a fan of chewing sounds, let's be honest: For a side channel name, 'Grapevine ASMR' would sound awesome!

'I love that he's just completely barefoot.' Me: 'You won't.'

Oddly enough, this was a summertime release back in 1988, not a Christmas one. Strangely, this was the THIRD major action movie fitting this pattern. In 1986, the Sylvester Stallone movie COBRA came out in May, same day as TOP GUN, and featured a Los Angeles cop who plays by his own rules, set during Christmastime. The following March, LETHAL WEAPON starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover came out, also about L.A. cops who play by their own rules, also set during Christmastime. I guess the DIE HARD twist is that he was an NYPD cop who just happened to be in L.A., but also, he played by his own rules. This was a hit in theaters, but it took time for it to acquire the reputation as the be-all end-all of action movies. It did inspire a TON of imitators, which are probably best defined as having the iconic Cop Who Plays By His Own Rules, a cat-and-mouse game with a villain who's taken something or occupied some place, and a setting which is an essential part of the story and which almost becomes its own character. The joke was that screenwriters would walk into a studio office and pitch their movie as "DIE HARD on a [fill in the blank]." Following the original, we got: AIR FORCE ONE (DIE HARD on a plane, also the John McClane is the President) CLIFFHANGER (DIE HARD on a mountaintop) DIE HARD 2 (DIE HARD at an airport) DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE (DIE HARD across New York City) EXECUTIVE DECISION (also DIE HARD on a plane) OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (DIE HARD in the White House) PASSENGER 57 (also DIE HARD on a plane) THE ROCK (DIE HARD in a prison) SKYSCRAPER (DIE HARD but if the building was on fire, also the John McClane is missing a leg) SPEED (DIE HARD on a bus) SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL (DIE HARD on a passenger cruise) SUDDEN DEATH (DIE HARD at a sports arena) TOY SOLDIERS (DIE HARD at a prep school) UNDER SIEGE (DIE HARD on a battleship) WHITE HOUSE DOWN (also DIE HARD in the White House) And probably a hundred direct-to-video imitators as well.

I haven't watched Galaxy Quest in forever. Citizen Kane, love. When Harry Met Sally, LOVE!

Ok, now I feel guilty for not finishing the Harry Potter movies (march me through the streets and yell SHAME!) lol. This is my Alan Rickman in my mind. Die Hard is in my Christmas movie rotation every year. I hate flying, my nerves lol. I've also never tried Taco Bell for breakfast but I think I need to change this.

The best written and directed action movie of all-time! This is to the action genre what Citizen Kane is to drama, or When Harry Met Sally is to rom-coms. If it isn't already, this script should be studied in film schools!Btw Cassie, I'd strongly recommend Galaxy Quest as another great Alan Rickman movie!

I was just about to binge TLOU 1-3 but now, it's Bruce Willis and Cassie Time ๐ŸŽฌ
