I CANT WAIT FOR ULTRAVIOLENCE!!

In Tropico, I feel like beyond the obvious religious symbolism of being in paradise and then the temptation making you fall into sin, and being made new through faith and baptism, it could also be about the stages of a relationship. You start in paradise or the honeymoon phase. Everything is perfect and you’re so in love. Then maybe something happens to test that. Either circumstances, like money and hardship. Or some kind of temptation like cheating or an issue like jealousy or just a lack of trust. And in the end if you work through it, you rise above it through forgiveness and understanding to come out stronger and more united. Or it could be her relationship with L.A. in general. Going through those same steps of thinking it’s paradise, seeing the darkness and temptation everywhere, and then realizing what you want and finding your true paradise where you belong. Because Bel Air is a gated community. Even though it’s in L.A. it’s like an oasis where you can feel comfortable and safe from the “garden of evil” surrounding you. I honestly don’t know. I’ve seen this video many times and there’s still so much I feel like I don’t understand. I do think having Elvis, Marilyn and John Wayne in Paradise is kind of symbolic of the way we treat celebrities like gods. They are idolized and we think of them as these monolithic beings who are so above us. And John Wayne for a long time was kind of thought of as this perfect example of an all-American man (even though we now know he was kind of a terrible person). Honestly, all three of them kind of have that all-American thing. Marilyn is the perfect woman, Elvis is the legendary rockstar. And all of them had these dark parts that we don’t really talk about. That goes back to Lana idealizing America throughout her early work that you’ve already reacted to. Especially the past, during those years these three would’ve been alive. Her whole persona is drenched in nostalgia for the aesthetic version of that time, not really delving into the reality of those decades. Anyway, I really enjoyed getting your thoughts on these two videos. Lana is definitely one to leave you contemplating.

there are no words for how excited i am for your ultraviolence reaction :D its easily my favorite of her albums. idk if anyone has mentioned it yet but pretty when you cry was done live and improv'd and i think the whole album was done in like a session straight through live in the studio (I would fact check that thought)
