The author Thomas Harris wrote Red Dragon first, then The Silence of the Lambs, then finally Hannibal. I believe he originally was going to leave it at a trilogy but, like you said, the movie studio came to him about Hannibal Rising, a prequel about Hannibal's "origin story" so to speak.
