I don't think guts leaving is what broke him. It's him losing that broke him. Griffin went his whole entire life never losing to anyone and has a huge superiority complex. No one up till now has beaten him in anything. He was always the smartest, the most skilled, the most cunning and the best looking person in the room. Then guts, someone he felt was his friend but still beneath him. Someone he owned beat him. Like even in the lead up, he wasn't concerned on if he would lose, he was concerned on if he would kill him and gets beat him with one swing. That shit shook him to the core of his being and the whole princess thing was basically him trying to get back his ego of being better than everyone else

2020-08-21 05:27:20 +0000 UTCI’m glad you’re enjoying this anime as much as I’m enjoying your reactions to it 😂 I’m pretty sure that Griffith considered guts his one and only good friend, despite what he said in his speech. When guts left he realized how lost he was without him at his side and it broke him, causing him to act irrationally and go see the princess (the sex scene in the manga is much more disturbing as it shows Griffith clearly thinking about guts during the whole thing). I’m beyond hyped to see your reaction to the last 5 episodes. Also everyone chill out with the foreboding comments and potential spoilers
