Clark is suitably creepy, Copper is a level head in the madness and Fuchs had a jittery energy that was amusing. The set pieces were also top notch like when we see the Thing first transform and assimilate the dogs. Jed the sled dog gave a wonderful performance, Copper's arms being bitten off by Norris' chest mouth and the finally showdown with Macready and the massive Thing at the end of the film.

2020-11-30 00:39:15 +0000 UTCThe cast is also great, Kurt Russell as Macready, the lone, badass pilot who becomes the hero and keeps his cool in this insane crisis. Keith David's first film role was as the hot headed Childs, giving a lot of emotion and attitude. The then unknown Wilford Brimley as Blair, who gives a splendid performance very much like a Lovecraft protagonist. He discovers the terrifying existence of the Thing, is driven mad by the truth and ultimately succumbs to it. Donald Moffat is very good as Garry, a leader cracking under the pressure.

The film to me is a awesome example of Science Fiction & Horror working in tandem to create a film that is both compelling and terrifying. The Thing is a creature that is so utterly alien, a horrifying aberration that twists and mutates all that come in contact with it.

2020-11-30 00:25:00 +0000 UTCIt owes a lot to the cosmic horror of H.P Lovecraft and is the first of Carpenter's apocalypse trilogy of horror films followed by Prince of Darkness & In the Mouth of Madness. This film popularized the whole trope of shapeshifting aliens and freaky, gruesome special effects in horror, specifically SF horror. It also features cutting edge special & practical effects with help from monster maestro Stan Winston and a score by Ennio Morricone, though it was cut up significantly in the final cut.

The film is the second adaptation of a Science Fiction novella Who Goes There? after Howard Hawks' 1951 film The Thing From a Another World. It was poorly received back in 1982 as nasty, gory and nihilistic but in the years following it's debut, it's been acknowledged as a horror classic and one of John Carpenter's best films.
