I'm trying to focus on films I'm sure they'd like :) If you're up for trying a new film, to see if you should recommend it yourself, I suggest A Prophet (2009). Practically nobody has seen it, which is fucking criminal. As for NJC, I don't think it holds up too well tbh (loved it when it came out, though!) And, even though it's not on Jimmy's already-seen-list, I'd be shocked if he hadn't seen it previously.

Sleepers (as suggested by @I like cheese) How a kids little prank turns into a everlasting nightmare & the aftermath, mostly around a courthouse. poignant movie. A really great cast.

It features an oscar winning performance by Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Chris Tucker and the best performance by Robert de Niro in a long long time (except The Irishman maybe). Fantastic movie.

2021-04-30 05:44:29 +0000 UTCThe Count of Monte Cristo (2002) - Excellent revenge story based on the classic novel. The Patriot (2000) - Mel Gibson revolutionary war action/drama. Also stars Heath Ledger (RIP), Jason Isaacs, and a bunch of other cool people. It isn't the most historically accurate thing I've ever seen but it's a fun watch. The Quick and the Dead (1995) - Sort-of-Western revenge story directed by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) with an amazing cast - Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russel Crowe, and the amazing Gene Hackman. Not the BEST movie I've ever seen but an extremely fun watch. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - Coen Brothers ?comedy? starring George Clooney. Supposedly about a prison break in the 1930s but really a retelling of The Odyssey. It's impossible to really describe this movie but it is amazing and you must see it. Minority Report (2002) - Fun Spielberg/Tom Cruise action-thriller about the concept of futurecrime - arresting people for crimes before they commit them. I'm not a huge Cruise fan but this is worth seeing. American Beauty (1999) - Sam Mendes dark comedy that won Best Picture in '99. It has fallen a bit out of cultural favor since (to say why would be a spoiler) but IMO is still a great film worth seeing... though your partner in crime might hate it, hah.

(A musical retelling of The Odyssey), Miller's Crossing (an Irish mob story) The Hudsucker Proxy (dark comedy about the world of business and success) Burn After Reading (dark comedy about ineptitude in espionage) True Grit (another adaptation of the book, better than the John Wayne one in my opinion; a western revenge story) And Barton Fink (a neurotic screenwriter in a mad world)

Any of these appeal?: Clue (1985), a who's who of 80s comedy talent does a wacky murder whodunnit based on the board game Speed Racer (2008), the Wachowski siblings campy bright kinetic action packed fun adaptation of the children's anime? One of my favs. Zodiac (2007), director David Fincher's look at the investigation into the Zodiac Killer, and on the nature of obsession, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, & Robert Downey Jr. Contagion (2011), Steven Soderbergh's star studded tense thriller about a worldwide epidemic, which while a significantly worse plague ended up being prescient in certain ways Big Trouble in Little China (1986) teams Kurt Russell & director John Carpenter again (after The Thing & Escape from NY) in a campy self aware satirical action comedy that is one of my top 10 movies all time. Kung Fu Hustle (2004), an action/comedy starring and directed by Stephen Chow. It's basically a kung fu movie mixed with a looney tunes episode, it's absurd and off the wall. He did a more grounded (slightly) movie prior to this one about super-powered soccer players called Shaolin Soccer which is also good, but I'd say start with Hustle. Maverick (1994), an adventure/western/action/comedy adapting the 1957 show of the same name, about a slick, fast talking gambler and his misadventures attempting to acquire the entrance fee to a major poker tournament. Stars Mel Gibson, with Jodie Foster, Alfred Molina, and James Garner. A personal favorite from my youth. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007), throwing a curveball: a documentary. It's pretty funny, about some super strange real life characters. Talks about competitive arcade gaming, specifically a big fight over the world record for donkey kong. It's a strange tale of underdogs, villains, and absurdity.
