August '21 Movie Suggestions?

Here's my selection: *Election* -1999 Call it a spiritual successor to Ferris Bueller's day off. Starring Reese Wheatherspoon, and Matthew Broderick. It's dark comedy at its finest. *Contact* -1997 Sci fi starring Jodie Foster, Matthew Mcconaughey, Interstellar before Interstellar. *New World*-2013 Yep, still going to be plugging this movie. The best gangster movie KR has made. It's got an ensemble cast, an adaptation of a popular CN movie, it's Korea's version of The Departed. *Rounders* Matt Damon, Edward Norton, John Turturro, poker, and even my childhood crush is in a cameo the hot Famke Janssen. If you like poker, this is a must watch. *Source Code* Jake Gyllenhall is leading this really interesting sci fi, I've yet to see a bad movie from this guy. *The Grandmaster* You saw "practical" fighting in the Raid, then you saw unrealistic wire fu from Crouching Tiger hidden Dragon. This is a hybrid of both. It's still beautiful Wire-Fu, but the martial arts depicted are actual martial arts from real life. The actor trained all year long to do the stunt work justice. Led by Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi, it's perhaps the most beautifully shot martial arts movie ever. If you do watch it, make sure you get the Chinese Edit (the longest version at 130 min). It's not just a matter of cutting stuff in the other version, they actually flipped some scenes around, it's a mess. *The Martian* - Surprised this wasn't already on your watched list as well. Based on a popular novel and starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain, it's a great adaptation of the novel. *Avatar* - Don't listen to the haters about how it's not an original story from a bunch of hypocrites. Everything in Hollywood is a remake/reboot of something. The themes are familiar but it's still a great movie, despite some cringy writing at times. Why? Because nobody on Earth can shoot an action movie like James mother@# Cameron. Also if this dude spends 200M, the movie feels like a 200M movie, some thing a lot of directors could learn from. It's not going to win an oscar any time soon, but it's fun and considering there's 3 more on the way, might as well see what the fuss is all about. Copying my recs and deleting the ones you watch, sooner or later it'll all be removed hopefully.

I refrain new suggestions, after suggesting The Patriot, which unseen extended cut pissed me off. But I will back others' suggestions. ""EASTERN PROMISES" written by Peaky Blinders' creator. Violent; Russian Mafia in London. Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts. It's fantastic cinema, 💯. "LEGENDS OF THE FALL" Brad Pit Anthony Hopkins, sort of a duh, of course. It's a beautiful narrative, but has emotional elements, so if you are not in the mood, wait. I'd be remiss not to say, "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid" because it's considered a classic. If you care about seeing films that defined early cinema and is still studied in film schools, definitely watch. Ok, that's a wrap.!

I’ll keep suggesting Death of Stalin, because I know you’re going to love it. It’s a dark comedy with plenty of serious politicking mixed into absolutely ridiculous and hilarious situations. It’s a mix of all the stuff I know you love to watch in a film. James Vs Cinema reacted to it and thought it was absolutely great.

I think they will all be good fits for both jimmy and dummy. a history of violence (2005) - viggo mortenson, maria bello, ed harris, william hurt. solid thriller/action. eastern promises (2007) - viggo mortenson, naomi watts, vincent cassel. russian gangsters in london. green room (2015) - anton yelchin, john from peaky blinders, jean-luc picard. metal af thriller/action. bone tomahawk (2015) - kurt russel, patrick wilson, matthew fox, richard jenkins. metal af western/thriller/action. finally, as a follow up to a comment i posted on barry 1x3, I'm going to suggest that for one of the dealer's choices this month, you pick: glengarry glen ross (1992) - al pacino, ed harris, kevin spacey, alec baldwin. some salesmen compete to win a cadillac. written by david mamet. as a writer yourself, jimmy, i think you will absolutely love the dialogue in this.

I haven't seen Eastern Promises since it came out, I should revisit that even if Jimmy doesn't...I remember liking it a lot. I still haven't seen Fury but from everything I've heard, both these 2 and I would probably like it.

It's a phenomenal movie. I would warn them it is a slow paced, long, contemplative film, just so they approach in the right headspace. But one of my favorites...and so beautifully shot.

Several good suggestions from you, but especially Glengarry; it's so very in Jimmy's wheelhouse on multiple fronts. Airplane!, Top Secret, 13 Assassins would be next on my ranking of your list, but they're all good.

Resubmiting unused older suggestions of mine. Maverick (1994), an adventure/western/action/comedy adapting the 1957 tv show of the same name, about a slick, fast talking gambler and his misadventures attempting to acquire the entrance fee to a major poker tournament.  Stars Mel Gibson, with Jodie Foster, Alfred Molina, and James Garner.  A personal favorite from my youth. Clue (1985), a who's who of 80s comedy talent does a wacky murder whodunnit based on the board game Speed Racer (2008), the Wachowski siblings campy bright kinetic action packed fun adaptation of the children's anime?  One of my favs. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) teams Kurt Russell & director John Carpenter again (after The Thing & Escape from NY) in a campy self aware satirical action comedy that is one of my top 10 movies all time. The King of Kong:  A Fistful of Quarters (2007), throwing a curveball:  a documentary.  It's pretty funny, about some super strange real life characters.  Talks about competitive arcade gaming, specifically a big fight over the world record for donkey kong.  It's a strange tale of underdogs, villains, and absurdity. Contagion (2011), Steven Soderbergh's star studded tense thriller about a worldwide epidemic which, while a significantly worse plague than our real pandemic, ended up being prescient in certain ways about the reality of last year and today.

You seem to love 'The Godfather' so might as well have you watch Coppola's other classic : - 'Apocalypse Now' (Theatrical Cut) (1979) Two of the greatest comedies : - 'Airplane' (1980) - 'Top Secret!' (1984) A great movie written by David Mamet (so great dialogues) with Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin and Kevin Spacey : - 'Glengarry Glen Ross' (1992) A strange movie I adore that won't win any polls but whatever I'll write it down anyway : - 'Bubba Ho-Tep' (2002) A timeless movie that gets better everytime I watch it : - '12 Angry Men' (1957) A kickass samurai movie with an ending fight scene for the ages : - '13 assassins' (2011) You've seen 'Scarface' and 'Carlito's Way' directed by Brian De Palma so if you liked those movies I would highly recommend his best movie : - 'Blow Out' (1981), an awesome thriller with John Travolta

Have you seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? If not, you should. Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Classic film. Funny and a really good western.
