I wonder if they assume that people know much about the BTK killer. I've read the major books about him. I'm not going to say anything beyond the fact that the writers had to know that their audience will have a wide range of reactions.

Also the music when Bill gets home and locks the door is freaking me out. Fincher just gets to me. It's more effective than any horror movie. He's just so freakin talented. I also love how they mentioned the Zodiac killer, considering that Fincher directed that movie as well.
