Hi guys theres a direct theory behind why kataras mother was killed many of us avatar fans know this and it is linked to hama since hama developed bloodbending and escaped the fire nation prison. The fire nation prison then knew what the waterbenders were capable of after hama escaped so since then the fire nation prison could no longer risk capturing waterbenders so they continued raiding and killing any waterbenders from the south pole since hamas escape and as yon rah mentioned "sorry were not taking prisoner today" makes sense is too why kataras mum was killed instead of being captured alive.
