I know the worst thing you can say to someone that is "meh" on a show is "You just gotta get to X episode and it will get good." Well... You just gotta get to the Nell episode and it clicks lol.

The drama elements are significantly stronger than the horror elements, which is my problem with the show. I'd prefer more of a balance. Totally with you on the jumping back and forth.

2024-08-12 11:11:45 +0000 UTCAs another comment said, the show is definitely a slow and deliberate build, but once you hit the halfway point things really start to shift, at least in my experience. And the first few episodes have a lot going on in them once you understand everything too. This one in particular really sets up Theo's character well, and personally I really love how the switches between the past and present are edited, often going from the hands of characters to make the transitions. This one also deals with some really heavy stuff for sure. The whole "Mr. Smiley" thing is awful, and like you I enjoy that it's set up to be something supernatural and ended up being a mundane horror instead (and all the more horrifying for it). As soon as she touched the couch in the basement I knew what it all meant, but it's a rough thing to think about.

2024-08-12 02:24:32 +0000 UTCIt is definitely a slow build of a miniseries. They really want you to understand the siblings before the *plot* gets going. Plus there's a huge amount of rewatcheability to this show. Pacing might feel off right now but it gets you to a place you need to be (imo). Theo tends to be the favourite sibling (I have an unfortunate attachment to Shirley, I just really get the way she is) and next episode is not my fav, but a lot of ppl like it. If you haven't noticed yet - we are going in descending order of siblings! The show is luring you towards "answers" by first showing the grievances each kid has. I try not to hype episodes bc it can throw off an experience. Of all the characters I think you'll like Theo, the mom, and possibly Nelly the most.
