Yeah this really made my night last night! I just had to see Jimmy's face watching a Lynch film and barreled through 2AM to get it done. As for the soap opera theme? His show is the same way. Twin Peaks is a nightmare disguised, wrapped, as a soap opera. It lends a lot of that dreamy quality that Lynch is so good at. Looking forward to more!

First off Jimmy you did way better figuring out this movie on first watch then I did lol.. in the beginning of the film after the jitterbug dancing scene.. we see a p.o.v. shot of someone breathing heavy and laying their head on a pillow.. this is Diane going into what I believed to be a possibly drug induced dream. Basically the first 2 hours were all a dream. Diane was a struggling actress who met and fell in love with Camilla. Diane had an aunt in the industry and it's possible that Camilla used Diane to further her career and when her aunt died Camilla didn't need her anymore and slept her way up the "lead role chain". Camilla was awful to Diane.. making her stay on set and watch her kiss someone else.. and that diner scene was just so uncomfortable!! That was Diane's breaking point.. she hired a hit on Camilla and when the deed was done she was riddled with guilt and knew she'd be caught soon.. hence her taking her own life. Now for the first 2 hours.. the dream sequence is again all from Diane's dream. She dreams that Camilla escapes the hit and survives... the car wreck.. she gives Camilla amnesia so she doesn't remember anything. Diane creates an alter ego for herself.. Betty.. and in the dream she meets Rita and tries to help her solve a mystery and they kinda have a fresh start. Now we have Adam Kesser who obviously Diane hates because not only did he give the role to Camilla but he also is sleeping with her. And if you remember when they were rehearsing for Betty's audition.. Rita was horrible.. it was showing us that she only gets the roles based of looks alone. So in the dream she makes Adam have a horrible day and have things taken away from him like has been done to her. When they show the hit man botch that job, that was her dream just hoping that he was incompetent and couldn't actually get the job done. Her dream is basically her trying to take back what she did. I could explain more but honestly if you watch it again more things start to make sense! Sorry for the long post. I just love this movie.
