The Haunting of Bly Manor FULL REACTIONS
Added 2021-10-16 01:37:41 +0000 UTCBit of a mammoth project that's taken up most of the last few weeks, but I needed to make sure I got it done early in case of copyright issues that made Hill House very stressful last year. Enjoy! I had a blast with the show.
NOTES: In my afterthoughts for (I think) 1x04 I talk about how I thought the writer was called Liam; in fact it was the director. Also, for some reason (tiredness, probably) I call Rebecca Jessica in my 1x09 afterthoughts (even wrote her name as such in my notes) but now you'll know who I mean.

2021-10-31 14:32:00 +0000 UTCJust about to start watching these (I haven't had the energy or concentration to do so earlier). This was a wonderful 'essence of' adaptation of Henry James novel 'The Turn of the Screw'. Now that you've seen both Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor I recommended you check out The Haunting and the The Innocents, both black and white films of the 1960s that are based on the books Hill House and Bly Manor took inspiration from. :)

Too often, possessiveness is treated as a symptom of love, and that can be such a dysfunctional message to put out there. I think the season did a really great job contrasting healthy vs. toxic relationships.

2021-10-22 08:20:26 +0000 UTCExcellent reactions, I'm glad you liked it so much! It makes a lot of sense to me that Miles and Flora don't remember anything. Not just because of their age (I mean I remember basically nothing before the age of 12) but because that stuff was so damn traumatic, plus they were 'tucked away' for a lot of it. But then another part of me is like, childhood trauma doesn't go away just because you don't remember it? I am overthinking it but Flora found the damn body of her caretaker soon after both her parents died. Miles makes more sense since Peter possessed him so often. I just wonder how you'd deal with that in therapy, having to make sense of it without the ghosts. I think a lot about Dani's response to the idea of love and possession getting mixed up, that they're actually opposites, in the context of her past and her future. Even though Eddy didn't mean to, it felt to her like he owned her. Like because they grew up together and because he was in love with her for so long and kept asking her to marry him their whole lives, and because his family became her surrogate family since her mom was absent and her dad was dead—she felt she was obligated to be with him. His apparition's hand on her shoulder during his funeral feels possessive. While Dani's hand on Jamie's shoulder is pure love. To possess someone inherently means they are obliged to be with you. But when someone loves you, they are actively volunteering to be with you every day. That freedom to choose is what makes it love, and that's what we saw with Dani and Jamie.

2021-10-18 06:12:57 +0000 UTCFinally finished binging your reactions and I adored them so much! I love this show and the story and characters. I truly connected with all of them and it was such a beautiful and tragic story. The acting was phenomenal, and I absolutely love your love for Hannah/Owen and Jamie/Dani, they all truly deserved better :( Viola's story was also heartbreaking, episode 8 is one of my favorites, finding out the background of the lady of the lake was super interesting and made me actually feel sympathy for her, another really tragic story. Rebecca deserved better too, what Peter did to her was horrific and I sob every time she is standing there crying after seeing her body. I have to give a shout out to the actor who plays Miles because he is INCREDIBLE, such an amazing performance by him especially considering he is so young too. Thanks for dropping this all at once, it was so fun to hear your thoughts and see your reactions :)

2021-10-18 01:59:18 +0000 UTCI'm so happy you watched Bly Manor and reacted to it for us. I love both seasons but prefer Bly because I think the characters are so wonderful. Despite the spooks, there's such a coziness at Bly that I find really charming. Jamie, Owen, and Hannah should be protected forever, at all costs <3 Thanks for your great reactions! As always, you're the best.
