I love the ROTS novelization's expansion on that scene! It shows Dooku and Palpatine talking with each other before Anakin and Kenobi arrive. Palpatine fills Dooku with great confidence that he would defeat Anakin. He essentially tells him that when he has killed Anakin, all the other Jedi will be insignificant to their rule of the galaxy. It makes Dooku's look of betrayal at Palpatine right before he dies that much deeper.

2022-08-11 23:35:48 +0000 UTCIf you look carefully at that scene in the movie, you can see Dooku looking at Palpatine just a few seconds before Anakin chops his head off and realizing he is being replaced/betrayed by his master. Actually, Palpatine orchestrated that whole kidnapping, JUST for that purpose. 😲

It is why "The rule of two" was established - "Two there should be, no more, no less. One to embody power (a master), the other to crave it (an apprentice)". That is why Palpatine ordered Dooku to kill Ventress - to prove his loyalty to him and ONLY him - and later he had Anakin kill Dooku before taking him as his new apprentice.
