Hunter x Hunter Episode 1 (1999)

Comments

The 1999 version had a lot of filler but it expanded on a lot more of the characters and the world. Like the hunter exam had an extra phase (filler) and was almost twice as long. The original series has 62 episodes followed by 3 OVA series totaling 92 episodes. It originally ended at the same place episode 75 ends with Gon & Killua landing next to someone fishing. The 2011 version fast forwarded through the Hunter Exam & Zoldyck arcs skipping some minor and major plot points. Like Ging not being a total deadbeat dad, the introduction of Kite, and IMO the biggest injustice... Leorio could open the 2nd testing gate by himself in the Zoldyck arc instead of it taking all 3 of them to open 1 gate.

Well, the 2011 version of HxH rushes through quite a few things early on faster than the 1999 version. Overal I think it's a bit of a hit & miss. Some things are done better in the 2011 anime, some things are done worse. The 1999 version is also more gory early on. When Killua kills the serial killer prisoner in the Hunter exam, he doesn't put the heart in a bag and gives it back... instead you see him holding the heart and he crushes it and it explodes in a bloody mess. It's really just early on though that it's relatively censored. Basically, early on in the 2011 version they weren't sure what exact direction to take and they let up on the censorship and rushing when it found its footing. I think the pacing of the 2011 version makes it easier to rewatch. I rewatched about half of the 1999 version a while ago and some episodes were kinda slow in dull (especially the filler stuff). Many hardcore fans swear by the 1999 version... but I think both are equally good for different reasons (at least up until Greed Island finishes since that's where the 1999 version stopped).

I wouldn't call it a spoilery reason. They just didn't think the anime would get far enough for it to become relevant when they started the 2011 version.

Love the reaction! I’m glad you decided to react to this. It provides context on who taught Gon on what a Hunter is and how he finds out about Ging’s profession. The reason why this flashback wasn’t shown in the 2011 is version is a bit spoilery, so now might not be the time to explain that. Can’t wait for ep 76!

hello there
