Orginally it was Jon who wanted Sam and Gilly to go to Oldtown with the son of mance rayder(he had a pregnant wife in the books) He also wanted Gilly to take only Mances son instead of her own son. It was because Melisandre wanted to burn the baby.

George RR Martin gave the show runners a list of "bullet points of major events" that were supposed to happen in the story, so the show writers followed those and filled in the gaps. Many fans feel Season 6 is one of the best seasons of the show, so I will dare say those writers did a pretty good job! π
