Well, the way the ants acquired nen is actually the same way Gon and Killua obtained it. It was explained way back in the Heaven's Arena arc. You can obtain it the normal way through training and meditation, but it takes long. Or you can use the quick and dirty method, which is to hit someone with a nen attack that's powerful enough to force the nen pores to open up.
The difference is that Gon and Killua did this dangerous method the same way, so enough force was used to open up their pores and not anything more. But Rammot was hit with killing intent, so it was a dangerous method. Remember those villains in the Heaven's Arena arc with disabilities? That's what can happen if this way of learning nen is used without holding back.
Also, if you noticed... Kite is very analytical. Him studying wildlife/animals makes perfect sense. With every choice he makes, he keeps a variety of other factors in mind. So he can actually accurately predict the way many of the ants are, since he also keeps their nature in mind. And he does the same when analyzing characters like Killua and Gon. On other hand, with Gon you can clearly see he treats the ants very differently. He has no expectations, no knowledge about them or how the ants are and it causes him to be kinda careless in his judgement.
Basically, you can clearly see just how different the characters think. Which I think is pretty neat.
