Because he had to focus on the expansion of Lucasfilm Animation, Dave Filoni wasn't as involved in season 3 as usual. He even had to step down as supervising director for it, the position he held since Clone Wars season 1. This episode was the exception. Not only did he direct it himself, he also did all the storyboarding for it. He saw it as a huge responsibility for himself.

BTW, not sure if you caught it, but when Obi-Wan switched his stance, Maul attacked with the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon, as Obi-Wan was expecting, and that is why he had the perfect counter. I love that fight! Also, to add a little bit to the symbolism, the pose and the way Obi-Wan cradles Maul's dying body, is a mirror image of the way he held his dying master in Episode 1, and Satine, his dying love, in the Clone Wars - both killed by Maul - yet, as opposed to Maul, there was not an ounce of revenge in Obi-Wan's mind. 😢 Everything comes full circle!
