Not sure if Gon actually has abandonment issues. But even much earlier in the show various characters have noted that his innocent curiosity could end up being very dangerous. Most notably from the appraiser in the Yorknew City arc. But Kite also mentioned things about Gon's mental state while they travel a few times. Gon's thinking is often very influenced by his emotions. And if his emotions are unstable, nothing can get through.
