In the japanese release, Shun was trying to keep his mother alive do to the time freezing effect of the battlefield. Dan picked up on it and told him to stop stalling and go see his mom in her final moments because he knew she would want Shun there. Before she took her last breath, she slipped him Skyress as her final gift to him. Hope that helps a bit.
