Not sure how hundreds of real web users with real accounts full specifically targeted threats and hate across various platforms can be considered a corporate smokescreen. Arguing for gamergate being about games journalism has become such a punchline, man, it's like saying National Socialism was about restoring Germany's infrastructure (#godwinslaw) - it might have been true for some very few people, but that's not really the important bit... The tweet was aimed at a few 'woman-hating bigoted pieces of shit' that followed me, and if that's not you, then disco, that's all that matters. Besides that, call yourself anything you want, but I don't think we'll agree about the definition and cultural impact of gamergate.

I guess I don't see the connection to the gamergate controversy around corruption and corporate collusion in the gaming press. The image of "gamergater" as a hysterical, neckbearded, woman-hating, bigoted piece of shit was a straw man/smokescreen put up in defense of this collusion and corruption. A similar kind of thing happened a short time before that with the controversy around the Mass Effect 3 ending, if you remember that. If you follow the for reals news at all, this practice of blackballing/defaming journalists and "conspiracy theorists" who expose inconvenient information shouldn't be new.
