Also Leofrich got caught because when Odda went to Uhtred's home his wife accidentally tipped him off and add that with the preachers testimony they were all pretty much caught. He offered to fight him bc in Uhtred's religion in order for warriors to got to Valhalla they must go out as a warrior with a weapon in hand (that's why uhtred gave ubba a weapon before killing him) if it had been left up to Alfred I'm sure he would not have given him that honor
