Spitballing a monthly concept ...💡

Alriiiiight, so since y'all are really my sounding board, I wanted to pick your brains on an idea I had.

One of my goals has been to lift up smaller creators and help get them thrown the way of the algorithm. Part of that is shout-outs, but another part is having people on livestreams. I think the audience is a lot more likely to subscribe when they can see the authortuber in motion, hear about their projects firsthand, etc.

So I was thinking about a monthly chat where I had about 3 other authortubers on the screen with me, and it would be slightly more guided in that we'd have questions we were answering while chatting. (I'd send people the questions ahead of time so they could feel prepared.)

I want a ~theme~ each time, but actually love the idea of centering a few around genre?? So like we could chat romance in August and I'd have authortubers who write romance on. Then we could talk about common pitfalls, publishing romance, if we tell our families about it, etc. Same thing for speculative fiction or middle grade or whatever!

My hope is that I'd have people who haven't been on my channel before (or not too often!).

Thoughts or suggestions on topics that aren't genre-specific? (Or people to reach out to about those topics! If you have a fav small authortuber who writes a specific genre, I'd love to hear it!)

THANKS Y'ALL! ☀️

I think this is a fantastic idea! One of the reasons I love your channel is the "chattiness" of it. I'm looking forward to this and meeting more people out there! :-)

love love love this idea!!! looking forward to seeing it come to life

I liked the idea of writers with degrees, self-taught, workshoppers, conference attendees, career switchers, etc. Something about their previous life that got them to writing. To showcase there isn't one true path to becoming an author. Also, I'd love to be a participant. I'm setting up my channel now and livestreaming sounds like where I need to spend some time- but dang that sounds intense. Being on someone else's livestream first would be an easier step than jumping right into my own.

That sounds exciting, especially with everyone centered around genres!

Love the idea as well! Another “discussion” I could imagine: writers who have a degree in writing / want one “vs” ones that are completely self-taught. I’d be interested in the different perspectives and experiences, what each group learned from their approach, how aha-moments about craft might differ, that kind of thing

AHHHH THANK YOU STEPHANIE :)

Oooh yes!! I would really love that as I've been really curious about the newbie experience in the past year or so.

Oooh, I love the idea of chatting with visual artists and storytellers as well!

This sounds so fun and a fantastic way to strengthen the authortube community. You could get authors writing from a single main character's POV and/or authors who have to juggle multiple perspectives. Maybe authors who also have experience in other fields, and how that affects their current writing. You could also do a theme around certain types of fairy tales, or folk lore, or that feature certain creatures like vampires, ghosts, etc (which isn't genre specific!). I think what I'd love to see is other authors who have pirate related books, and you all could talk about the various ways you handle those types of stories.

This is a fabulous idea! I'd love to see streams centered on the how-to of writing. How do you plan/plot/outline/draft, moving from first draft and beyond. Perhaps also an 'everything fantasy,' stream because there are so many sub genres to talk about!

I love this idea! It would be interesting to see the difference between writers on authertube who are full time writers and authors who have a day job and how their process and time expectations vary.

Oh this sounds like a lovely idea! Hmm, I’ll throw some topic-spaghetti on the wall and see what sticks: • writing around obstacles (writers block, day job, kids, social obligations) • neurodiverse writers and how people make writing work despite being ND • multi-hobby-writers and their other hobbies and how they balance their energies • the other types of writing (basically poems, songs, lyrics, maybe plays- everything that’s not a novel) • Newly Published authors and the things they learned along the way • Night writers “vs” Day/Morning Writers • Representation in Publishing • A chat with exclusively fan fiction writers and how they work / what their goals are • Maybe a stream with people who don’t want to publish? And just write for themselves? I dunno how many of them are actually Authortubers tho 🤔 • Professional Writers (people who make their income writing - but it’s not from books but from articles, copy texts etc) • Different types of writers (burst writers, continuous writers, plotter, pantser) • Other Types of Writing (Handwriting, Dictation, maybe writing with one of these digital typewriter devices - idk how they are called. The ones that are basically just a keyboard and a tiny screen and you download your writing onto your document at your PC) • DnD Writers and what they learned about storytelling while doing DnD These are the ones that came to mind immediately. ☺️

Agree! There are so many resources around drafting and finishing that first draft, but revisions feels like you're just thrown into the wild to figure it out.

I love this idea so much! As for your question, what if you had one for authortube newbies and you discuss their struggles and realizations. It would not only help the guests but also the chat members who are in/about to be in a similar boat.

oh! this sounds super spice maybe one of the topics could be about young adult and new adult? writing stuff in that group where its not so much teen not so much adult yet? don't know if that makes sense ha I'm thinking more along the lines of contemporary, slice of life genre also as a comic artist, it would be cool to talk to creators who not only write but create visually too

I know I do authortube

Brainstorming ideas: panels of plotters/pantsers, early birds/night owls, those who have indie published their books talking shop and giving advice to newbies, write to market vs. write what you love, write anywhere and anytime vs. write in a specific place at a set time, those who write daily vs. those who write whenever, a panel discussion about how to take care of your body (exercise, eating right, etc.) for authors, a panel about wide publishing vs. Amazon-exclusive publishing, anything related to writing about or talking about food, a panel of all LGBTQ+ authors, authors talking about a book that changed their life, authors talking about the tools they use (notebooks, pens, technology, coffee, etc.?), a "How do you get your ideas?" panel, etc etc

I love the idea of themed livestreams! I'd be really interested in the editing process. I feel that sometimes the drafting process can be pretty romanticized and editing is often made out to seem like the tedious part of the process. So maybe an editing stream where people talk about their different editing approaches, the nitty-gritty side of it, and maybe a slight focus on the more positive aspects of editing.

I love this idea! I’d like to hear how everyone goes about their process like do they plan and if so how much planning do they do

This is a great idea! I love watching directed/themed livestreams. As for non-genre related topics, I’ll always suggest theming a chat around character creation/arc building. As a viewer I really connect with projects where I have an idea of who the MC is. (Also I’m horrid at writing well rounded characters so the more advice there is out there for me to watch the better 😂)

Love the idea! I like the idea of hearing from authors who write different age categories ( picture books / kid lit/ middle grade/YA/ new adult/adult) and what that’s like/their favorite books/why this age range really speaks to them etc

SkippingViolets

Great idea! I would definitely tune into this and add more authortubers to my watchlist.

I don’t have any ideas for themes to add but I’ve hearted ones I second and I love this idea in general!

Zara Hoffman

I love that idea

Ray Burkett

OOooh, I love this idea, thank you!!! :)

Kate Cavanaugh Writes

I think it'll have to depend on when the guests are free! But I hope to have guests from all over, so I'm sure there will be several with European-friendly times!

Kate Cavanaugh Writes

Awesome! :)

Kate Cavanaugh Writes

Oooh, like have someone repping from each "side" or ideology? Less debate but more just general chat about work/life/writing balance with our goals?

Kate Cavanaugh Writes

Seconding everyone else, I think this is a great idea!

I love this idea! It would be great to see other creators on too.

That would be AWESOME! I would definitely come to those. I like the idea of different genres each month. I'd also like to know about what they've each learned so far in their writing journeys, what stage of the process they're in, etc.

Mary Wockenfuss

I'd love watching people talk about their writing processes or current projects or whatever they're doing!

Love this idea! Maybe do first time writers, first time going to publish, already published, pantsers/planners/plantsers.

BethIsWriting

And please make them Europe friendly! (:

Anastasia Saint-Germain

I'd love that, I'm looking to connect with other authortubers who write adult, specifically science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction so I love the idea of it being genre-biased.

Chandra Arthur

I actually really love that idea and would love to hear different people talk about the same genre, so much to unpack! The writing routines, the plotting ways.. oh my oh myyy cant wait!!

Anastasia Saint-Germain

Sounds like a great idea. A theme could maybe be around doing it alongside a day job. Maybe covering people who just want to do it as a hobby and those who aspire to take it more into a career focus?

Heck yeah! Would love to see lots of smaller Authortubers be featured and the theme is a great idea too :)

Hayley Haggerty

Oh that’s an awesome idea! A theme for each month is cool too!
