Dr. Gadowski's Testimony, 1977

"Caryn and Allen had discussed a magazine that they were apparently looking at in the store, and I believe I had a copy of the magazine in the room, or a similar copy and Caryn volunteered to-- or told Allen that she would get the magazine, or one of us would get the magazine for him to look at, and I remember her asking me specifically if I would go to the room to get the magazine and it sounded somewhat silly to me to go all the way up there to get a magazine, so I said, "No. Why don't you go?," and this conversation took place on the roadway between the stairway and the lobby of the hotel. We then entered the hotel room, or the hotel lobby and I told her I would wait by the fire and, as I mentioned earlier, it was very cold, and the fire looked very inviting. We decided we would sit by the fire for awhile. The two children went toward Caryn toward the elevator... So, Allen and I walked down and sat on the couch by the fireplace, read the newspaper and the two children and Caryn went to the elevator, but she had apparently told them to go back and sit with me; that she would just be a few minutes, which they did. They returned and sat down next to me by the fire and she went up the elevator by herself..."

Caryn should've said... "Maybe Mr. Rosenthal and I will go on up to the room together and look for it. Don't wait up." That would've gotten Dr. Ray moving on the double!

The magazine in question was Viva, a 1970s women's companion to Penthouse. According to Wikipedia, "Viva was essentially an erotic magazine for women, containing articles and fiction delving into women’s fantasies, and exploring their sexuality." Rosenthal wanted to look at it, and the implication is that the he and Caryn (who had previously been lovers) were flirting. That might explain Gadowski's hesitance to assist in their flirtation.

I remember that site. It had a few pictures of Caryn in the snow and her face, which was eaten away up to the ears and forehead. She had nice teeth. Her feet were blackened and shriveled up as well but the rest of her was in okay shape. Part of her buttocks were eaten as well. She was straight as a board, her legs pointing straight out from where she had frozen. He obviously killed her very quickly in the few miles between where he picked her up and dumped her, perhaps as a result of seeing the frenzied activity over her disappearance. I'm sure her squeeze felt rotten about sending her up to get the magazine, most guys I know would have done it but maybe the honeymoon stage was over there.

Interesting, I never saw that.

I swear about 15-ish years ago, there was a stand-alone website (maybe just a web page?) that went into detail about Caryn Campbell's murder, complete with graphic crime scene photos I'd never seen before or since. It was allegedly created by Raymond Gadowski's children and contained many personal details and stories about her, and also about the investigation. Who knows if it was really them, but I do remember the photos fit the scene, and the personal stories were very endearing.
