Hagmaier Interviews Bundy, Jan 22 1989

Another good read for anyone who hasn't seen it already: Bundy's final confession to FBI Agent Bill Hagmaier.

This isn't the full interview is it?

Does anyone know where I can find these conversations with Bill H.

This was a mystery for a long time actually, until Bill explained it in a documentary in 2019. He said Ted wrote down "12" while saying "half a dozen" out loud. Hagmaier corrected it for the record.

Tiffany J.

I always find it interesting when I read this transcript that Ted states he severed half a dozen heads and Bill incorrectly responds "So approximately twelve"

LOL 😂

Hahahahhahahahah 🤣🤣

Bill: Yes, you did.

Melanie Englert

Ted: Yes! Except it wasn't in October as I recall. It's hard to go back to that time, I'm more of a rum raisin person now, but I'd say it was about 30 cones? I think that's what we came up with? Did I say 1973?

Melanie Englert

Bill: Octoberfest?

Melanie Englert

Ted: Well, uh, that's a good question. I think what we really need to know here is why I liked vanilla more than chocolate. Chocolate has an effect on, uh, society as it is, that uh, I can't really put words to other than to say I preferred vanilla. I, well, we talked about strawberry as well but to put it in the simplest terms, we'll stick to vanilla and chocolate. In 73, I think this is when it started, I had a vanilla cone at the local circus, they have a name for it...

Bill: How many did you steal and when did it start?

Melanie Englert

If Ted was accused of stealing ice cream:

For those of you who watched Dorothy’s HBO documentary, did you notice the numerous tapes she has of recorded interviews with Ted? She mentions that they are not marked for fear of them being discovered and exploited. I truly wish, not from a voyeuristic standpoint, but rather wanting to know and understand the “why” that she would release a book solely about Ted. She and Hagmaier are unique in the compassion they showed Ted and his story, separate from that of a serial killer, has so much value.

Nicolette Troncoso

Very true! I think that's why (in my opinion, I believe) Ted was honest with Dr. Lewis. He knew it was too late for him, but he wanted her to help others with his "problem" if she could.

Tiffany J.

Ted himself also seemed to be interested in the "why" :)

Yes, there are some more tapes! Richard Duffus requested them from the FBI and kindly shared them with the community here: https://www.darksiderpress.com/Hagmaier_Tapes/Announcement.html He almost certainly had other recorded conversations with Hagmaier, but I've yet to find them. He had unrecorded conversations as well, but it is my understanding that Ted never wanted to discuss too many specific details, and Hagmaier didn't press for any. He was more interested in understanding the behavior and habits of the serial murderer in order to create a better mouse trap for them, so to speak. Hagmaier was interested in the "how" and the state investigators were interested in the "what." Very few people were interested in the "why" except maybe Dorothy Lewis. And us, of course.

I wrote one more question/comment but as it didn´t get saved I´ll try and reconstruct it. Namely, I wanted to ask if this interview was the only occasion on which Bill Hagmaier interviewed Ted in those last days before his execution? Did they talk more? Are there any other tapes/tapescripts of their conversations? I know Hagmaier was present during all Ted´s interrogations by the Washington, Utah and Colorado investigators, and I´m aware that back then the time was running out and obviously the priority was given to discovering the truth about the numbers of victims and locations of their bodies, etc. That´s understandable, but still I think that it´s a pity that so little time and attention was given to the motives and generally all the psychology behind these crimes. I feel that kind of information would be crucial for future crime prevention and generally for the benefit of the society in the long run. And that´s what Bill Hagmaier was interested in, so I wish they had had more opportunities to discuss this matter.

Joanna Marek

It would be very interesting to read Bill Hagmaier´s book but I honestly doubt if he´s ever going to write it.
