Dr. Lewis' Psychological Evaluation, 1987

"Let me begin by saying that there is strong evidence that from the time of Mr. Bundy's arrest through his incarceration and performance at his trials that Mr. Bundy was functioning in an irrational and often self-destructive fashion. His mood throughout this period fluctuated from depressed, lethargic, and unproductive to grandiose and exhibitionistic. Unfortunately, at neither time was he able to function effectively either as his own lawyer or in collaboration with his attorneys..."

Dr. Dorothy Lewis was called in by the defense to evaluate Ted in 1987 while he was undergoing hearings to determine whether he was competent enough to act in his own defense at trial in 1979. This is her report.

Public? No.

are there public copies of her taped interviews? @killerinthearchives

I just commented in another section a wish similar to yours. Her experience and the knowledge she gleaned from Ted could benefit so many not only in the study of serial homicide but also maladaptive behavior in general.

I really enjoyed the documentary Crazy, Not Insane with her. That last segment on Bundy really was interesting. So far it’s the first time I have heard him admit that his grandfather had a horrible temper. I wish they would do another documentary where we can hear her tapes she has on him.

My feeling is that dr. Lewis, if given more time, could have got to the roots of Ted's mental problems.

It looks like dr Lewis and dr Tanay coincided in their opinion as to Ted's incompetency to represent himself, and dr Lewis went even further finding him incompetent to stand trial. But as we all know a new trial was not ruled.

Very interesting! Dr. Lewis' observations and assessment were certainly worth serious consideration. Also a few additional details re. Aloi's experience of Ted changing. Funny though, on page 4 bottom paragraph, I believe Dr. Lewis attributes Dr. Tanay's assessment which she quotes in part, to Judge Cowart!
