A Conversation about the Riverman, Part 1

Keppel: ...the missing juvenile problem is that nobody gives a shit. And especially no one gives a darn about runaways, you know. So we end up with mountains of lists to go through, and verify if they're home or not...that's the problem that exists.

Ted: This guy has really figured it out by now. He's figured it out.

Keppel: Oh, he's way ahead of us. He's so far ahead of us, it's unreal...

Reichert: Do you think it's possible that this guy could stop?

Ted: No... well, unless he was born again. (laughs) And he got filled with the Holy Spirit in a very real way! He's either moved, he's dead, or he's doing something very different.

On November 17, 1984, Green River Task Force members Bob Keppel and Dave Reichert met with Ted at the Florida State Prison to discuss the Green River Killer case. On this tape, the trio cover the GRK's dumpsites and victim profiles, and Ted gives his opinions on who the killer might be and how he operates.

It makes me curious about the level of influence Ted may have had on Gary Ridgeway. Both operated in the same area, and Ridgeway started two years after the Kimberly Leach Trial. Ted was nationally covered and could have hit close to home in a different yet dark way for Gary. Much like Dean Corll’s crimes were a big influence on how John Gacy operated. Gacy was essentially a copycat killer when compared to Corll.

I agree. He did not say that. (And then Michaud chided him over it!) Keppel was a poor interviewer. Actually they all were. They insisted Bundy confirm their biases and theories rather that just letting him tell the story. I understand it, but for the sake of history I wish we had more of Ted and less of Michaud, Keppel, and Aynesworth. Especially Aynesworth. So much arguing.

Interesting, I hadn't noticed that before!

This is the only place that I can rant about how annoying I find it that Keppel quoted him saying "gentleman Gacy" in The Riverman when it's so obvious he says John Wayne. It's bugged me so much since I first heard the audio because I can only see him outright lying about the quote because I can barely hear where a person would hear "gentleman" at all. So petty but it annoys me so much lmfao

Keppel is known for this...he goes; bla bla bla bla
