Interview with Stephen Michaud

"So what would happen was, he would go into a sort of state where he seemed to be reliving whatever we were talking about. I didn't happen a lot of times because he was really resistant, but when he did, he would get a kind of far away, detached voice, and this welt would start right across the orbit of his eye. But it would not follow the cheekbone as it were. It was closer to that... I don't know if you ever saw the movie... The Exorcist. With Linda whatever her name was. But do you remember in that movie when her head would switch around and all that stuff? Well, she gets welts on her face, white welts. As if the devil was whipping her, right? If you look at the movie, you'll see it there. It was sort of like that, only it didn't just appear like *zip*, and then go away. It was just, I don't know, it's something physiological, I'm not saying that Ted was being possessed at that time or anything like that. But it was noticeable and it was only under his one eye.

And then he would grab-- he did that a lot-- he grabbed the tape recorder and cradled it, and have his hands around it, like it was some kind of ache or something. And then when he'd be finished with telling, reciting, or recalling the anecdote, he would kind of come back into the room, if you will, his eyes would clear up and that little welt would go away. And he'd be exhausted..."

My conversation with Stephen Michaud, back in 2021 (sorry, only got around to editing it now!)

They searched Bundy's car twice; first time they found nothing in it, second time they did. And it happened to be hair evidence that bolstered their cases. I think, starting with Stewart Hansen finding Ted guilty - if you read the trial transcript it's obvious the state had a poor case and DaRonch was coached - that, having decided Ted was their man, the authorities were going to do whatever it took to stop him.

Great interview! I can't believe you've been sitting on this for 2 years. So fascinating. Thanks!

Anna Peterson

Yeah, he was wrong about the "red matter" found on her headboard. It was tested and found to not be blood, but more likely the wart medication she was applying at the time. My guess, from what I have surmised in speaking with him, is that he believes Utah authorities may have planted hair evidence. I'm not sure why exactly.

Great interview. I think he is dead wrong about Burr, and seems less up on newer developments in various cases. Most interesting thing to me is I think he said he thinks police had “fucked with” evidence? Wonder which cases he is talking about.

Great interview!

As a Christian I do believe in possession. I have to look it up I forgot this guy name he was innocent of the crime he was being accused of. I found it on here. He was in jail with Bundy. And he describes in his book of Bundy smelling of ammonia, and, like he went from being a calm person to be in out of control within seconds, because he wouldn’t put up with Bundy bull crap. Yes, human beings can be horrible but there’s something more going on here. Especially so many reliable people witnessed it, said stuff about it like one minute he was fine next there was total presence of evil they were scared of him. Polly Nelson his attorney talks about this as well.

And it's the hyperbole that just really rubs me the wrong way. Ted was bad enough as a human being, there's absolutely no need to try to present him as some demon or monster who has assumed human form. If anything, it would be better to note how predators in the animal kingdom -- cats, for example -- are observed to have dilated pupils when hunting. This is because they hunt at night and dilated pupils pick up more light than constricted pupils thus allowing them to be more efficient nighttime hunters. Ted was a predator, who, like cats, enjoyed toying with his prey before ultimately killing them. The parallels work perfectly and requires absolutely no foray into the pseudoscientific or supernatural. Apologies for the wall of text, whenever I try to create paragraphs on mobile it ends up posting an unfinished entry.

Yeah, "completely black," as in the sclera also becoming black, seems impossible. I'd imagine they were being hyperbolic there, but it wouldn't surprise me if his pupils dilated noticeably, to the point where the iris was barely visible. I just read about something called "stress welts" which can occur as a result of intense emotional arousal as well.

Tiffany J.

Dilation of pupils is one thing, but I've heard it described as the his eye going "completely black," Michaud even makes this claim. It seems a bit more than pupil dilation. Like something one would see in a horror movie. I don't think this is intentional lying so much as it an attempt to otherize Ted. To make him something other than human. Because if Ted is a human and capable of these things then any human is capable of such things. Some people just can't handle that reality.

Nunya consoin

Multiple sources report it happening, so I doubt they were all lying. Pupils can dilate as the result of very strong emotions/arousal in some people. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/eye-opener-why-do-pupils-dialate/ I'm not sure what to say about the welt, though.

Tiffany J.

Still waiting for someone to explain the biological mechanism which would cause a human eye to temporarily and suddenly go black. Until such time I once again call bullshit on that oft repeated but never substantiated claim.
