Honestly, as much as the original myths and most interpretations don't do enough to absolve Calypso and her tragic love from being abusive, I still prefer the story being sympathetic for her. I've been reading a fanfic online that takes the imprisoning decision away from her and places it on Zeus. She's still pushy, but the fact is that they're both prisoners and don't actually control each other's freedom. And I think that goes a long way personally. The underlying story will always be a toxic romance, but the bittersweet tragedy of two people abandoned by the fates finding varying degrees of solace in each other is cathartic. She wants him so badly and he, at his weakest, can't entirely refuse the respite being offered, even as he longs for another. Anyways, like I said, most interpretations don't write the relationship carefully enough to forgive Calypso, and she becomes an unsympathetic abuser. Her primary literary purpose is to tie up Odysseus for the remainder of his ten year ordeal, rather than fulfill the tragic asperations of romantics, such as myself.

It’s important to note that it’s pretty unlikely that Calypso actually SAd Odysseus in Epic. It happens in the Odyssey but this isn’t the Odyssey, and this version of Calypso is clearly supposed to be sympathetic and not a predator. Obviously her actions were still wrong, but she isn’t as bad as she’s being portrayed. Also it is somewhat ambiguous whether she herself is intentionally keeping him there.

In the Odyssey, Calypso imprisons Odysseus for seven years on her island and forces him to be her lover, even knowing he does not love her and is trying to get home. After several years Zeus orders her to release him and she complains that gods can take lovers but goddesses can’t. One of the quotes by the author Homer is “saw him (Odysseus) weeping live warm tears in the nymph Calypso’s house - she holds him there by force. He has no way to voyage home to his own native land” and “Calypso, the bewitching nymph, held him back deep in her arching caverns, craving him for a husband” and “but my heart breaks for Odysseus, that seasoned veteran cursed by fate for so long - far from his loved ones still, he suffers torments off on a wave washed island rising at the centre of the seas…Calypso holds Odysseus captive - luckless man, despite his tears - (she is) forever trying to spellbind his heart with suave seductive words and wipe all thought of Ithaca from his mind”. Note that ‘spellbind’ is there, it shows up in a Calypso song. The lyrics in Love in Paradise are also really clear that she’s forcing him into her bed “Just you and me, dear, my love for life, soon into bed we’ll climb and spend our time”, Odysseus says no “Hell no, I could kill you where you stand, I’m no pet I’m a married man”. Does Calypso care for his consent? “oh handsome you may try, but last I checked, goddesses can’t die…you’re adorable, bow down to the immortal Calypso…under my spell, we’re stuck in paradise”. Athena also reinforces this when she says later in the song “seven years she’s kept you trapped out of your control” and we see Odysseus on the brink of self harm. Wangui has such a beautiful voice, the music is beautiful. But what’s happening to Odysseus is monstrous, and so I don’t feel sorry at all for Calypso in Not Sorry for Loving You. It’s an abuser’s apology “And if I pushed you, or if I came on too strong, or if I ambushed you, for that I’ll say I was wrong, and if you hate me, then I am sorry my love’s too much for you” that’s not an apology. Calypso herself was victimised by the gods. It doesn’t give her the right to be a predator. Just my analysis though! No, girl. You’re Odysseus’s predator. You’re his ZEUS. Let him the heck go. I also reacted the same way when Odysseus said “I love you” “just not the way you want me too” it is very weird to put there, and doesn’t seem in character for him to say there.

So so so excited about your reaction! About Calypso, I'm pretty sure the "she's cursed to fall in love" thing is something from Percy Jackson and not actually from mithology. So I think her curse is just beign stuck in the island. She cannot leave and she trapped Odysseus, so for me the Pupperteer interpretation is spot on. She is manipulating him even while telling him she loves him.

Ik in the original Odyssey it was Calypso who kept him on the Island she herself didn't ever want to leave she used her magic to keep him there against his will as for epics version I think she herself is bound to the Island but she still has control over who else can leave which is why Odysseus probably just didn't dip and start swimming out of pure desperation

To answer the question of how the island works, the details vary slightly from one version of the story to the other but basically she was the daughter of the titan Atlas who got his ass handed to him by Zeus. Atlas was punished to hold up the heavens, Calypso was sent to her island. In most versions she technically could leave, but she'd probably just get smacked around by Zeus and sent somewhere worse if she did.

She wasn’t cursed to fall in love just throwing it out there, she was just lonely and entitled as all the gods were. She couldn’t leave the island but that was it. Which yes is sad but I struggle to sympathise with someone who goes from sad and lonely to snatching up a sex slave to try and scratch that itch.
