You should check out this quintet version from the 25th anniversary performance! Sierra Boggess and 4 Phantoms https://youtu.be/_8cXwAs0SZE?si=3-S99OL-xQCcQsAu

I got to see this musical live when it was on tour around like 2017 or 2018 and I've never been the same since. Seeing the chandelier come up in front of the crowd was one of the most magical things.

Ugh yes I agree completely. They’re my fave phantom duo and I don’t think anyone will ever top that spot in my heart. Their chemistry and ramins ability to show the lovesick version of phantom is incredible (I’m aware it’s a problematic pairing on so many levels but he does it so well). Usually the phantoms go for one emotion (I guess?) and stick with it but that also just changes the way this pairing is portrayed and he just does it so well

Sarah Handberg

I love flexing by doing Christine's part of phantom of the opera at karaoke. I'm nowhere as clear and powerful though

Classic Bussy

Ramin Karimloo (the Phantom) and Sierra Boggess (Christine) are THE best in these roles since the original 1986 West End cast. To clarify how huge a compliment that is - Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote the role of Christine for his then-girlfriend Sarah Brightman, a classically trained opera singer. Every subsequent actress I’ve seen has had to simplify the runs at the end of “Think of Me” because they’re insanely difficult. But not Sierra. Who, by the way, is not classically trained. She’s a trained singer but didn’t start learnjng operatic technique until she was in college. And Ramin. He balances the exquisite tenderness and vulnerability of the Phantom with all that rage and violence beautifully. A lot of actors go zero to sixty on the anger part without giving the softness room to breathe but Ramin shows us both parts of the Phantom and it’s just… *chef’s kiss* Phantom of my heart.

Andrea Hunt

Couldn't agree more - he makes Raoul much more likable than many others have managed to do with a character that could so easily become a wet blanket in the eyes of the audience.

Yara Kaas

No, in the movie they do not have mics. Because this takes place in like the late 1800's I think. Mics didn't even exist.

Bub

So the Overture of a show is basically an instrumental opening that plays one or more of the main musical melodies/themes of at least the first act. then generally after intermission there'll be another instrumental intro called the entr'acte that does the same, but it references back to the act 1 finale and then introduces act 2 melodies I'm deeply amused you compared the orchestration to Legally Blonde XD this was the 25th anniversary performance - I grew up in the 90s with the cast recording my parents got in London in 1987. The tremolos were there then, too. :)

Magnus Taliesin

Yes! I adore Motn and an alternate version from another fandom

Phoenix Mackenzie

God I love the richness in the Phantom's voice. He's one of my favourite singers

Cat A

great video it took me 3 days to finish it but great vidoe

MJ

Yes! I had already forgotten how much I love this musical!!! *squealing in theater kid*

Annie A.

✨info✨ This is phantom (in concert) so they only have one set and simulate what the show might normally look like using video screens. So even though you aren’t seeing the full spectacle of the show, Ramins performance makes up for it.

Nicholas Hambruch

Sierra is an amazing singer. Vocally (and as you said, also visually) stunning. Ramin (the phantom) is extremely compelling, too. But I gotta say what I love most about this production is it's Raoul. Hadley (who is very good friends with Ramin iirc) just brings a lot of passion and personality to Raoul and it makes me actually love him more than the Phantom. I don't like the big song that follows this, since I find it overly long and somewhat repetitive, but Ramin makes it good and I think your input and reactions will bring me some fresh input that will make me appreciate it a lot more. I'm excited to see it

This is one of my favorite musicals of all time, and the first musical I ever saw. My choir teacher showed us the 25th Anniversary, which is what you're watching, in class and I immediately fell in love with this musical. I also got to see it live with a touring company around...I wanna say 2016 or 2017? I don't remember. But it was even more amazing in person.

Carly Chapman

Music of the Night is probably my favourite song from this musical, I cannot wait for the next part!

DnD Addict

The show has very much been like this since the 1980s! The movie leaned heavily on a lot of the show’s most impressive visuals, and the magic of movies probably made it even easier. For instance, when he’s rowing them across the lake and the masses of candelabras rise up, the film had them move the boat backward while the candelabras sank and extinguished, then ran the footage in reverse to achieve the look of candles rising and spontaneously lighting as they exited the water. To my knowledge the film did not influence the stage show—it’s the longest-running Broadway show for a reason!

Tessara Dudley

These are my two favorites. Ramin is amazing as the phantom even more amazing as he doesn't consider himself a trained singer and can't read sheet music. He heard phantom as a kid and knew he was going to play him. They where 1st cast as phantom and Christine in love never dies which is a sequel to phantom. Andrew loyyd Webber loved them so much he brought them over to phantom. This believe it or not is a cut down on set production as at the Royal Albert hall and not on their main west end stage, on that the candles rise from the floor. One of my daughters friends has just got a call back for phantom for Christine. My daughter the other day in her singing lesson her teacher pushed her scales and she got the top note here. Little secrect about that high note is because it is a strain on the voice they don't sing it live at every performance it is recorded so they can rest and not have to sing it.

Liz Lilliman

She has that effect. Can confirm i was the same. 😂😅

Mariana Tayt-Sohn

I was a huuuge phantom fan since childhood, read the book, listened to so many versions, watched the movie, so when i was older and made a trip to ny and got to see it live i can tell you, the first time that chadelier goes up i was BAWLING. It is one HELL of a production to see in person.

Mariana Tayt-Sohn

Sierra and Ramin are by far my favourites to play these roles (of the few I've heard), voices are excellent and chemistry is amazing!

Danika Wolfbaine

Joined patreon just for this musical, it is my all time favourite alongside Hadestown!

AislingBee

48:30 Why are Americans catching strays when the characters dunking on the North are French? ;-;

Bennett

Casper if it makes you feel better, the movie helps a little bit with the transitions but if I'm honest I still get confused even with my phantom knowledge only being the movie. This proshot though helps fill in some of blanks I have on what the movie was unclear about. Also if you want to vocal anything.... i suggest watching Riding the Cyclone musical. The Song Jane Doe will blow you away I think.

Seraphina Stardust

Since I've never seen the proshot (and I don't know what came first), did the movie bring in any from the stage production or visa versa. I know some times it happens just depends on the director and other behind the scenes people.

Seraphina Stardust

Yay for Phantom! I'm so happy. Carlotta (the original prima donna singer, the lady with the extra... gravitas...) is such a tough casting and such a tough role to act and sing out properly. She is supposed to be a talented, and very experienced singer, who sings very nice, but is maybe a bit over her best days, but still a great singer. Starts singing 'Remember Me', and she is actually supposed to be, and is good. But then, Christine stands in for her, and there is supposed to be an immediate contrast, with a more natural sounding, pristine, and soaring new voice. Obviously, it's a very challenging task for Christine to sing that aria out in such a way, but also for a good Carlotta to sound magnificient on her own right, but maybe a bit too grounded in her professional ways, too technique-y. This came out really well in this recording! Anyways, let's goooo!

Balazs Foldes

I wonder of Moulin Rougue would count as one, that would be a favorite of mine

Dylan Mancy

Shows that are meta with another show going on are some of my favorites! Obviously, Phantom is a great example of this. My personal favorite is Curtains the Musical, highly recommend it

Critical Devil

In the movie version (which I definitely recommend watching at some point), the do not wear microphones!

Kjrsten Schindler

AHHHH so excited to see you react to Phantom! It is the longest running broadway show for a reason! I cannot wait for you to see more!

Thistle

This was just as fantastic as I hoped! Can’t wait to see you fall further in love with my favourite love triangle!

Sydney LaRocque

Eee, yay! I've been waiting for this one! The Opera they're rehearsing in the beginning is a fictional opera about Hannibal 😂 Ancient Carthage Hannibal, not Lector. (And no, in the movie they don't have microphones - this takes place around 1880/1881 though the film stakes it at 1870 for some reason) - and the 'dark stories of the north bit' haha yes, Christine Daae is actually meant to be Swedish, but she and her father traveled all around Europe, as he was a musician. Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo are everything, man. Dream team.

Kristina [Lady Greensleeves33]

Also...I'm LOVING watching this with you!

KarmaStratus18

Lol. * Christine Daae sings first time* *Casper immediately falls in love *

KarmaStratus18

I'm so excited that you've started Phantom, it's one of my favorite musicals! Already from your reactions here I can't wait to go through the rest of it and see your reactions and thoughts on the music and story!!

geekygiraffe

SO excited for this reaction!! This is my favorite musical. I saw the movie when i was 7 and ive been hooked since. If im not mistaken, mics are more of a more modern thing for musical theater i believe it started in the 60s and wireless in the 80s? (Dont quote me on that) but there are a lot of things done vocally in this show that also show its musical theater and not opera. This proshot was the 25th anniversary, so even though it was recorded then, the music was written back in the 80s. I love Sierra's Christine so much. The first thing i heard her in was Ariel in the broadway production of the little mermaid, such a beautiful and unique voice.

logicaldreamer

Ahhh I adore POTO. The movie version was the very first musical i saw. My mother dragged me to it as a kid and I vividly remember sitting in the movie theatre feeling shook to my core stories could include music like this. Just the mere concept of musicals blew me away. It’s a weird one lol 😂 the music is amazzzziinngggg so stoked to hear ur clever and thoughtful breakdowns.

Broody Gaming

You might hear people refer to particular musicals as ‘rock operas,’ by the way. I am sure opera performers hate it, but it is a common phrase.

Tessara Dudley

Just a note, in case no one mentions it: an overture is instrumental. It often contains the main musical motifs or is composed in order to set a particular kind of mood for the show, but it’s always going to be a mainly orchestral piece. It’s like a big musical ‘ta-daaaaah’ to let the audience know we’re getting into the start of the show. It’s often quite bombastic, as you heard here. Not every stage musical has one—some people consider them outmoded—but they’re pretty common, and also generally used in ballet and opera.
