PotO: Entr’Acte - Act Two - Six Months Later THRU Twisted Every Way [UNEDITED]

The phantom is back and he brought MUSICCCC

Comments

Right? Like so many of Raoul's lines make me so a)pissed off and b) incredibly uncomfortable, as well as how he switches between treating her "they can't make you do this" then he makes her instead, like wtf? He said he cares but not enough to actually care about what she wants(to not to what the others are telling her to do) and not enough to defend and want the best for his supposed fiancé...?

Phoenix Mackenzie

Or trying to lure her back with gentle reassurances using the method he got her to join him in the first place.

Marguerite McBee

My impression is, yes, Phantom is in love with Christine, but now he's trying to convince himself their relationship is purely professional because he overheard the conversation with Christine and Raoul at the end of Act 1, and feels hurt and rejected.

Carly Chapman

Also, Nicole Scherzinger kills it singing, I think it's 'Phantom of the Opera,' but I don't remember.

Carly Chapman

To promote the show back in the 80’s, they made a rock-style music video. Sarah Brightman played Christine in that first run and she’s in the video, though Michael Crawford, who originated the role of Phantom, is not in it. I recommend giving that a watch, though, because it’s a fun one!

Tessara Dudley

Entr'acte is basically like an overture for Act 2. It's a combination of the French words "entre" and "acte" which mean "between" and "act". It's literally the music between the acts.

Elizabeth Buerke

I second this about the movie also the cut song from the movie "No One Would Listen" is such a good song into the Phantom's Psyche

logicaldreamer

Yay, Act 2! I think Phantom is, imo, one of the minority of musicals where the second half is just as strong as the first half, both musically and plot-wise. The most famous songs are all from the first act, but some of my favorites are coming up, soon.

Kimberly Kohn

So, in Masquerade they do mention the engagement, I think you just missed it while talking about something else. "Think of it, our secret engagement, look your future bride!" Is Christine's first line. :) Also, act 2 hype! Love act 2. In terms of other PTO content I do actually highly recommend you watch the movie! It is not as amazing as the stage play, but in terms of movie adaptations of musicals it is pretty good, not to mention some of the scenes are beautiful. If not the full movie maybe certain songs from it, Like "Think of me" and one from act 2 you have not done yet so I won't spoil. I also highly recommend Lindey Stirling's version of Phantom of the Opera. It is just instrumentals but it is GREAT. Also, as a french horn player, so happy to see french horn love. <3 It is highly underrated and yet one of the most difficult to play. <3

Thistle

your youtube intro for notes/twisted every way is funny because you were like "phantom of the _____"? and i recited every other adaptations of the phantom of the opera (megaplex/paradise/the mall/etc) haha

babie boy

Oh wow, the play is veerry different from the movie

I love that they use Prima Donna's motif whenever they want to convince their "prima donna" to sing. In Act 1, they did it for Carlotta to stay; now in Act 2, they do it to convince Christine to sing so that they can trap the Phantom.

I really love Hadley’s delivery of Raoul’s “so it is to be war between us” line. Other actors, including Steve Barton who originated the role, deliver it with a sort of cold calmness, but Hadley matches Ramin’s growling shout in a way that really highlights the ways in which Raoul and the Phantom are foils for one another. Raoul’s heel turn from “they can’t make you do this” to “I care that you’re scared but not enough to stop asking” is so telling to me. Raoul’s rage at the Phantom far outweighs his concern for Christine. At the end of the day they’re two overgrown children fighting over a woman they don’t care enough about to know or understand. A pick your poison buffet of toxic men. And I really adore Hadley for leaning into those aspects of Raoul’s personality. It makes him a more interesting character. The masquerade costumes are absolutely bonkers. Each one is completely unique and crazy detailed. There’s a tumblr, Operafantomet, that lists every single costume and has side by side images of Maria Bjornson’s (the designer’s) sketches and the live costume. Very worth a look. Part of the stage direction during Masquerade is that Christine, given her recent experiences with the Phantom, is actually quite frightened of masks, and that fear is triggered as different cast members grab and twirl her into the dance. It’s noticeable that Raoul’s NOT masked in any way, which is probably to help Christine feel comfortable attending. Which is a good thing for a partner to do! (see I can say nice things about Raoul I swear)

Andrea Hunt

Masquerade is my absolute favourite song and scene…im loving following you along for this!! Im glad you appreciate the costumes! Megs costumes are my favourite (and just my favourite character hence the pfp) but its so nice seeing someone appreciate the costuming!

Amy Humble

Oop, the first music motif we hear once we're back from Intermission is from The Angel of Music. It does blend into Music of the Night later on though.

Kory Misun

My views on the phantom's 'distancing' himself from Christine. Remember at the end of Act 1, the Phantom overhears Christine and Raoul's meeting and conversation. He feels wounded and rejected, but he is way too obsessed with Chrstine and her talent to just get away from her. So instead, he tries to convince himself that he can push their relationship into a 'professional' lane, and not have personal feelings for her, just appreciate her talen and work with her. Which, I still believe, is deceiving himself: he is still infatuated and has deep feelings for her. But he tries to do what all egoistic guys would do: act cold and distant, even rude to her, to show that he only has professional interest in her, no personal feelings. Guys are just guys. :)

Balazs Foldes

That is such an interesting read on Raoul. To be honest, I don't think that either men are good, and tend to see Christine as this thing to possess. I partially agree with your opinion on Raoul - he certainly tends to talk over her than with her, and does absolutely not consider her feelings and thoughts numerous times - I still think you're kinda harsh on him. When Christine tries to explain her reality to him for an outsider it does sound ridiculous! Of course he laughs it of. Is he right to do so? NO!!! But it is an understandable reaction. And Christine does not really explain herself clearly, because she is incredibly confused. She's been gaslit and groomed by the phantom for years at this point. She knows in her heart that the phantom isn't a good person, but she also truly believes that he is an angel of music sent by her father. A narrative the phantom is happy to play by. That is incredibly fucked up! The phantom doesn't love her, he owns her. Really, neither men are a good choice, but if I'd had to choose I'd totally take Raoul over the phantom. But I'd rather advocate for the third option and have her ditch both of these toxic men and have her live her own life for once...

PumpkinSparks

In french horn scenes, I always think of the Jurassic Park theme.

Balazs Foldes

so in the original novel, the phantom's face was like. skeletal almost. He didn't have a nose, it was really intense. But of course that's not really feasible for a broadway show where he's got to sing a lot.

Magnus Taliesin

It baffles me that people think Raoul is a good man. He is awful. There's a reason Phantom is angry when he shows up, and it's not just jealousy. Phantom has been around a long time, he has seen many Raouls come and go. These rich young men just want to play. They are never serious in their pursuits and they leave ruined or broken girls in their wake. Or worse, the girl ends up married to the rich man and her career is over. Phantom doesn't want that fate for his beloved muse. He already knows Raoul doesn't respect Christine at all. The first time we see him, he manipulates her with good memories then immediately laughs off her concern and refuses to take no for an answer when he tells her they are going to dinner. Not to mention, from the line "this is one visit i'd prefer to make unaccompained" everyone thinks Raoul and Christine are sleeping together and he never defends her innocence. She's an unmarried younger lady who is half-dressed and he just busts into her dressing room. Then she disappears for a while and when she tells him what happened to her he calls it a dream. Just completely dismisses her trauma. "All I Ask of You" is not a love song; it's Christine breaking down and begging for rescue while Raoul is once again telling her she's overreacting. And this is immediately after Phantom murdered a stage hand. Then we have this brief glimpse of their relationship six months on and it's still Raoul not listening and Christine still terrified. He doesn't defend her; he pretends to soothe her, to calm her down. But it's nothing more than keeping her hysteria in check. He doesn't care about her emotional state at all. Which is beyond obvious during "Twisted Every Way" when he tells everyone they are going to use Christine as bait. The reason we love Phantom--a literal killer-- is because for all his considerable violent edges, Phantom usually puts Christine's comfort first and he respects her as a woman and an artist. Whereas Raoul disrespects her on every level.

Phoenix

Christine and Raoul are engaged but Christine wants to keep it secret because she's scared of the Phantom finding out, and Raoul doesn't understand why she's so anxious about it.

Magnus Taliesin

The Phantom being outcast for his deformity is a holdover from the original novel, where it was far more extreme

Eleonora Witzky

I freaking LOVE Masquerade! The song itself is already phenomenal. But then you add that choreography? Perfection!!!

PumpkinSparks

Just a fun fact, in case you didn't know. The Phantom can hypnotize with only his voice. Which is why Christine always seems to be in a trance when he's around her. The musical doesn't quite explain this very much.

Ryan Torres

One of the reasons I do not like Raul as a love choice for Christine is because, although he is very protective of her, he's also not afraid to use her for her own protection if that makes sense. Christine does not want to perform in the Phantom's opera but he's come to the conclusion that the only way to capture the Phantom is to have her perform. So even though she's absolutely terrified, he and and the managers are pushing her to do it. Even in masquerade, Christine is not comfortable revealing that they are engaged and he keeps pushing to go public, even after promising her they could keep it secret, 'You promised me'. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Phantom is also a good love choice for Christine, but, in these scenes, Raoul is not truly taking Christine's feelings into account.

MissDisneyChick

I love you seeing media always being in English the way Doctor Who explains it with some kind of connection/translation in your mind

Kiki

Lol at French "people". I love that you immediately were able to tell a masquerade is kind of dumb when the MASKED PHANTOM exists. Which is exactly why Christine looks so uncomfortable later, I think, when she's separated from Raoul at the party. She is paranoid. Justly so. Also, yes. The Phantom's Red Death costume is EVEN BETTER than all the other amazing costumes Also lol'd at the Dora the Explorer type intro for the second part. And yes. It was called Notes, before Prima Donna Hell yeah for trusting Raoul. I get why you don't. He's intense in a weird way. I love that though. And his guy liner Also I LOVE Carlotta's "she's mad" here. She is no longer angry she's being upstaged. She's, frankly, a little concerned FOR Christine. She DOES understand. And it's all the actress's choice to portray it like that. I LOVE all the emotions in Twisted Every Way, but I especially live the line "Am I to risk my life to win the chance to live?" Take it easy and thanks!

Casper, I'm not sure about other countries, but in the United States release of the Royal Albert Hall recording there is an additional 20ish minutes after the show where they have a lot of original and new Phantoms and Christines take the spotlight to sing with each other. This includes the original Christine, Sarah Brightman, and the in-coming Phantom of that year whose name escapes me. The original Phantom, Michael Crawford, makes an appearance as well, but he doesn't sing because he had just finished a show--The Wizard of Oz--a couple minutes beforehand and ALW wanted him to rest his voice. If your copy of the RAH recording features this extended portion as well, that would make great bonus content. And you'd get to experience several Phantoms at once.

Phoenix

Ahhh you're so so close to my favourite bit of the whole show, small violin section, only lasts about a minute but I could listen to it over and over.

Heather M

Raoul: They can’t make you Also Raoul: *makes her*
