That's one of the things I love about this show's world building. A world so pure and positive most of the time, and yet, the presence of danger loops with many frightening beasts of mythological origin. Cockatrice being a creature of old English origin, being a dragon-rooster hybrid feared for its stare that could kill instantly. Many narrative mediums (like this episode) have made this as turning victims to stone instead. These ponies are well aware of the dangers and know to avoid them. But face them if they must. Courage is not the absence of fear after all.
