The buzzing of her phone caused Vee to stir, this had been the sixth or seventh text in the last 10 minutes. She rolled over and grabbed her phone to see what was going on. All the messages were from Amara and the first 9 were completely unreadable. It was as if Amara was trying to text her one-handed while riding a bike down a very bumpy road. The last text was short and only stated that she'd be over in 15 minutes.
Why is she coming over? Did something happen?
Guess I will find out soon.
Vee got out of bed and started her day as usual. Dressed, she waited for Amara's arrival on her couch, coffee in hand. After a couple of minutes, she got another text from Amara, “On the roof now.”
Vee got up from the couch, grabbed her keys, and made her way up to the door that accessed the roof. A quick prayer later, she opened the door to find Amara sitting on the roof, her wings wrapped around herself like a blanket, watching the rising sun.
Vee walked over and sat down next to her, “Did you fly here? And did you try texting while flying?” she asked, looking at Amara.
She smiled and nodded, “Yes, I took a slight detour which is why it took me a bit longer. And I might have almost lost my phone a couple of times due to turbulence. Next time I fly lower when texting.”
Vee just shook her head and grinned, “So what's the occasion for you flying over, we both know you can just teleport here if it was urgent.”
Amara slightly unwrapped her wings from around herself, sticking her arms up, and then stretched them behind her back and leaned back until she lay back propped up on her elbows. The whole maneuver just so her wings wouldn't get in the way of her arms. She let out a sigh and looking at the sun responded, “I kind of wanted to fly just for the sake of flying again. That was my plan when I took off. But it felt like I was missing something or someone, so I came back and thought I'd text you but that turned out to be a bit difficult. So what's the occasion?”, she tilted her head to look at Vee directly, “Vee do you want to fly with me? I don't care where we are going as long as we fly there.”
Vee’s eyes lit up and she nearly jumped as she got up, “Yes, let me just grab a few things, and I know exactly where we are going.” She quickly made her way down the stairs from the roof again to her apartment and quickly grabbed a bag for her phone, wallet and her Enochian Text, she also quickly grabbed an energy bar and headed back up to the roof.
When she reached the roof Amara was still waiting for her now standing across from the door leaning against one of the HVAC units. “So where are we going?”, she asked as Vee practically threw the door open.
“We are going south first until we reach the river and then follow it until it joins with the Mississippi. From there we should be able to see the Missouri join as well. Then maybe stop for something to eat and then we can see where the wind carries us.” She explained as she flipped through the pages of her text.
Amara nodded and quickly checked the route on her phone. Once they were both ready they stood a couple of feet apart giving each other space. While Amara did a few stretches to warm up, Vee spoke a longer text from her book. Amara stopped her stretching just to listen as Vee’s singing reached its peak and then ended. There was a bright flash of light as Vee finished conjuring her wings, even after having seen them a few times now Amara was still fascinated by them. Where Amara’s wings had black bones with red membranes between them and reminded her slightly of bat wings, Vee’s wings were what you expect from an angel, white feathers with golden shafts that looked like they could belong to a bird.
After flexing them for a second Vee looked over at Amara and nodded. With that, they both took off, Vee first and Amara after her. Amara caught up within the first 2 thrusts and used her illusions to cloak them both from anyone on the ground. While their wingspans are similar Amara had a bit more power so she let Vee take the lead in their formation as they ascend towards the clouds. Once above the low clouds, Amara dropped her illusions and they started heading south.
They hadn't been flying for more than a couple minutes when Amara had an idea, she waved at Vee to get her attention and once Vee was looking over at her Amara blew her a kiss and dived into the cloud below them. Vee was looking down at the cloud trying to find Amara again when she felt a sudden warmth envelop her from below. Looking beneath her, Vee was staring directly at Amara flying on her back. She was close enough that Vee extended her arm and tried to grab Amara’s outstretched hand. With a smirk, Amara dived again before Vee could grab her, not as far as last time, and flipped over so she was flying upright again, and then pulled back up to fly level with Vee.
They continue south, occasionally diving through the clouds to check where they are if the clouds are too dense. After about 20 minutes Vee spotted the river below and motioned for Amara that they should turn right. They spot the river curving south after another 10 minutes and turn and follow it.
While keeping the river below them they start at least 2 races to see who can fly faster, both won by Amara.
After another 40 minutes, they passed over a city and watched its busy traffic and people as they flew over. Past the city, the river was bending west slightly and its bed opened up a bit into a bunch of fields with few buildings in sight. They both dove down and chased each other around silos and irrigation pivots.
They soon hit a number of bigger lakes and while still low they tried to figure out which of them could fly closer to the surface, surprisingly Vee was the winner of this contest and they soon encountered the next larger town and climbed back up high again.
While high up again they could spot the occasional commercial aircraft flying at nearly double their altitude and while passing over a large area of backwater lakes and ponds Amara pointed out to Vee that one of the sloughs looked like an octopus which they obviously had to investigate. They dove again and Vee motioned that she wanted to land. They found a nice spot near one of the sloughs. Once they had landed Vee sat down on a log and ate her energy bar while Amara checked their progress on her phone. “Looks like we are about halfway there.”, Amara stated, showing Vee their rough position.
“Cool, how long have we been flying for? It doesn’t feel that long but we have to fly back for the same amount of time and I don’t want to fly at night and get home late.”
“We have been flying for about 2 hours, if you don’t want to fly back today we could see if we can find a hotel for the night in St. Louis.”
“Sounds like a plan. Do you need anything?”
Amara cocked a brow, “Why? Are you offering?” she asked, licking her lips.
“Not right now, maybe later. Depends on the hotel room you get us.” Vee retorted.
“I can live with that.”, Amara said before stretching, “Are you ready to continue on?”
“Yes. Let’s go!” Vee exclaimed as she stuffed the wrapper of her bar into her bag, “Last one in St. Louis has to pay for everything!”
“Wait, that’s un-” Amara shouted after her before leaping into the air and chasing after Vee.
Unsurprisingly to Vee, Amara didn’t need long to catch up with her. The rest of the flight was pretty uneventful. Vee tried a few maneuvers under Amara’s careful watch so she could give Vee feedback later. With fewer distractions, they managed to reach the mouth of the Illinois River in about one and three-quarters of an hour and they spent another hour or so just flying over the convergence of the three rivers in the area at different altitudes pointing out a variety of birds and other animals they spotted. Eventually, Amara wraps them both in an illusion again and they land in a small park in the suburbs of St. Louis, they both dismiss their wings and Amara dismisses her tail and horns as well before dropping the illusion.
Just outside the park they caught a bus downtown and spent the rest of the day touring St. Louis before checking into a hotel and falling into bed both exhausted and happy to have spent the day like they did.
Comments
Just waiting for the cannon reveal of Vee's wings. This one was a bit of a tease. Hopefully soon, I think we're getting to a point where it would at least make sense. Though I wouldn't mind a good plot reason proving me wrong, it's certainly happened before following Amara. Hell, my lack of ability to predict this stuff is half the reason I have a paid subscription to your work Nyx. That doesn't happen for me with many authors.
